Model Regression
Posted by USArmyFAO on Sunday, April 20, 2008 1:18 AM

Greetings All,

Like most probably I have had some ups and downs in the hobby when it comes to output of completed kits.  However, I have achieved what I would like to consider above average status in the quality of work and right now I feel there is no kit I really could not tackle and complete to a satisfactory or better level.  Lately though, I have been busy working on older kits (Revell-Monogram and Airfix), building them out of the box but spending time finishing them as I would the latest offerings from Tamiya, Dragon, MPM, Eduard, AM, etc.  This is a blast!  I don't know if this is nostalgia, a form of AMS, or just pure simple child-like regression.  My wife would go with the latter, but she tends to refer to the hobby in genreal like that.  I prefer to call it nostalgia.  Is anyone now or have they previously experienced a pattern (I refuse to call it a rut as ruts carry a negative connotation) like this?  Just thought it would make for an interesting discussion...

Cheers, Matt

Hi USArmyFAO,i agree with the nostalgia bit, thats what makes me look for a particular kit,it reminds me of my younger days. But i have the problem of getting models finished,i have six on the go at the moment, and one of those has been on the go for years, but i still buy kits that give me that feeling from my time as a youngster, and if i came across certain models,i would snap them up straight away, even though im not finishing any at the moment.my wife and son call me an anorak, jokingly i might add,but im definitely nostalgia motivated when i get kits.

I have read posts by some of our teenage members that are having fun doing what they did as a 'kid'Laugh [(-D] Truly!

So, I must believe that 99 and 44/100ths % of us suffer from your malady!

I've always enjoyed building older kits I had or wanted as a child and putting my current skills into the work. Sometimes, my results are pretty good, other times I think my 12 yr old build was better and more fun. This usually happens when I can tell there is some real work that have to be involved to even make the kit look like the actual tank.
