Paul Severson, Burnsville, Minnesota

Paul writes: “This scene is based on a story my father told me about his time in Italy during World War II (34th Infantry, Red Bull Division). He was returning from supply when he nearly slid off a narrow mountain road, just avoiding tumbling down a steep slope. Nearby infantry had to help pull the jeep from the edge.” Paul built Tamiya’s 1/35 scale Willys jeep and modified the driver. “The surprised onlooker is from Verlinden,” he says. “I was able to track down the Red Bull patches from Alliance Model Works.” He painted with Testors Model Master acrylics and weathered with artist oils and pastel powders. Dry transfers from Archer match one of his father’s photos. Paul built the groundwork with wood filler putty built up over polystyrene blocks and finished with craft paints; fine sand and Woodland Scenics flora finish it off.
