I made the mistake of buying two boxes of these when they first came out, as the box artwork showed the pilots to be wearing the new generation of flight helmets (HGU-56).  The actual figures are what can best be described as generic--very little detail or poor representations of the actual equipment.  Save your money on the CH-47D crew set--they are pretty poor in my opinion.  I do not have the courage, or cash, to try out the Vietnam-era CHINOOK crew.  I prefer the Nemrod figures, although they do seem to be a bit small and are made for the Blackhawk--and they are pricey, but not that much different than Trumpeter's offerings.  Also, the CMK  Blackhawk pilots are not too bad, but I would definitely replace the heads with those from the DML 'Nam helo pilots if you have, or can find them.  CMK'S  seated Huey pilots heads are OK, too.  In any event, all of these figures have the older SPH-4 helmets, not the current HGU-56 type.  You will have to figure out the year you want to represent to see which type of helmet will be the most appropriate.  Trumpeter has a long way to go to improve their figures; I purchased the recently released set of German ISAF figures and, while better, still need new heads (look too small for the body) and arms with body armour look a bit clunky--weapons are excellent, though.  Also, any attempts at any 1/35 scale helos should check out Cobra Company's site; lots there to improve your models with.

Here is a rundown of available 1/35 helo crews that includes the Trumpeter sets you have listed.  I have #415, which is listed as a Modern Chinook Crew, but they could also be for a Blackhawk.  This set also comes with the gimmick of a Chinook cockpit for them to sit in.  I'm not sure why, since the cockpit looks a little funny with no helo around it.  The figures are pretty good and are very usable.  The helmets are a little squished from front to back and don't look quite right though.  One guy I know cut the helmets in half at the ear line and added a disk to get a better shape on them.  They looked good once done.  You could also swap out the heads with Dragon ones or resin ones.  Other than the helmet issue, they are pretty good.

Trumpeter 1/35 helo crews?

Does anybody have any build experience or thoughts on Trumpeters' 1/35 helo crews?  Specifically 415 (Modern era Blackhawk? crew)  and 417 (Vietnam era Chinook crew)

Are they good quality figures?  The price seems a little high ($30) for 4-5 figures.  Thanks!
