1/72 CH-53E Kit Bash
Posted by Mike F6F on Sunday, June 12, 2011 5:08 PM

My third USMC helo was a kit bash of the Italeri MH-53E and an old Fujimi CH-53D kit.

The MH kit is for the Navy mine towing version with massive sponsons and a different rear cargo hatch etc.  I know that there's an Italeri version of the USMC Super Stallion, but I couldn't track one down.  The sponsons and fuel tanks from the delta aren't exactly right for the echo either, but I gave it a best compromise attempt.

Even in 1/72nd, this is a large kit.  I again had to scratch build various antenna and airframe pieces like the IR mount extending off the port nose.  The decals were all from the spares box, so again, I know the MAG codes, etc., aren't correct.

Like the other two models, various vent grills that weren't molded in are parts from a left over 1/700th aircraft carrier PM fret.

Again, I hope I didn't offend any USMC aircrew with the compromises required to complete the model.

Is 1/72nd scale a fading scale?

Mike

Well, seems you answered my question at the same time i was asking it. I am glad it was this one. I got very close up and personal with one of these in Afghan a couple of years ago. The downwash off these is really something else.

Another great build. I take it this one didn't fit on the Verlinden base lol.

Is 1/72nd dieing, no i don't think so, at least i hope not. But i guess i am lucky in that i build mainly WW2 German aircrfat, still tons of AM and decals for those. Of the modern kits i have, i have still been able to find plenty of AM and decals for it. Think you just hit a bad time for your subjects at the moment.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Hey Mike. Great job. paint looks awesome. I know of a few of the Italeri Super stallion kits around the place in my city. If you still really want one we might be able to arrange for me to send one over to you - off of this site of course.

At the end of the day one's work may be completed but one's education never!

Thanks everybody.

I do like this helo, it is just so big.

I haven't found the proper case for it yet to deal with the large rotor span, but I'll come up with something.

Thanks for the offer, sng, but I'll stick with this one.

Mike
