Kaman SH-2F Revell kit 4823 Main Body Color?
Posted by COMike on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 6:37 PM

I purchased this kit back 1996 and now that I am retired I want to finally build it. I flew as an rescue air crewman in this helicopter, actually the UH-2C, back in the early 70s. My concern is finding the right color for the main body of the aircraft. I am good for most of the smaller parts but none of the colors at Hobby Lobby look right. I looked at Model Master and Testors paints. Also I have some concern about using a rattle can, should I go to a airbrush? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Mike,

I believe the correct color is Engine Gray FS 16076.

I built a Sea Sprite several years ago, a SH-2 and that was the color I used.

Hope this helps.

Mike

No, the Navy used Dark Gray 16081 on their Helos, in the days before the light grays TPS, not 16076.

And I would recommend an airbrush any day over a rattle can. 1) you have far more control over the paint application, and 2) not all colors are available in rattle cans, but you can thin down any bottled paint color for airbrushing. Yes there is a big money outlay and a learning curve. But it is worth every penny and moment spent.

Oh youre gonna have some fun now. Take some old kits and use them as crash test dummies before you try it on a pet project.
