Hmmm... the local shop has the Mi-1 (which I've been hemming and hawing over for awhile!), but I wasn't aware of the 48th R-4.

Yeah, all the Czech kits (MPM, LTD, Czech Model, Special Hobby, Pavla etc.) are pretty ugly. I've been trying to get brave for a while now and build the LTD IAR-80/81 and LaGG-3. Thankfully, Mirage came out with a P.11c so I can relegate the LTD kits to trade bait or burnt-out airfield diorama duty!

Blackwolf ... the Special Hobby kit is 48th. They also have a Mil Mi-1 out. I have them both but have not had time to start construction. According to my notes, they are about $18 each. I would not recommend them to beginners but I believe they's make a fine kit for someone with experience.

I've got a copy of the Special Hobby R-4 kit. It's a combination of injected, resin and photo etched with a vacuformed canopy. I have not had time to build it yet but it looks like a good kit. Anyone build one yet?

Hey Lee,

Well, I haven't been sworn to secrecy or anything so...

I had a short exchange with Joe Myers of Accurate Miniatures on another forum. He was asking for "requests", so to speak. I guess he was trying to get a gauge of what we all wanted.

I had mentioned several subjects that I'd like to see in the future including some more CanAm & World Championship of Makes cars (Lola T70 could be on the way - I know, this ain't the car forum, but I'm excited about this one), and one of my suggestions for an aviation subject was the R-4.

Got an email the following day from Joe, and he basically wanted to know if I was psycho, er... psychic because there's an R-4 in the works and, according to him, it's about 80% finished. (If I remember correctly).

Anyhoo, I think we can reasonably expect to see a 48th Egg Beater in the next year or two, or three...

I just hope it doesn't go the way of their Beaufighters and DML's A-26's.

The only "decent" kit of the R-4 that I know of at this point is MPM's 72nd offering. It's a typical MPM job and I was almost gonna build it until I heard about the 48th kit. I can wait!

Steve, what kit are you talking about? I would like to build a R-4, but don't know of any kits.

Wow... I'll have to ask some of the guys if they remember it, cuz I don't! I must be going blind! Although, I just developed this fascination with the Egg Beater recently, so it may have escaped my attention. Anyhoo, it'll be a while before this kit comes out, so I have plenty of time to gather stuff .

Anyone know if the R-4 on display at the USAF Museum is currently hanging as well?

Its in their civilian hangar hanging from the ceiling over the HH-52A.

Hmmm... is that a recent addition to their collection? A few of us took a trip to Sturbridge Mass. for a Regional show a year or so back and made a trip to this museum. I don't recall seeing one there and their website doesn't show it either.

I forgot to mention, the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT (just north of Hartford) has a completely restored one too.

Claymore, yeah saw the USAF Museum page on the R-4. I just checked it out again, and I realized that this thing weighed only slightly more than my old car, Josephine! And I do have to complete a couple searches for other websites. Google is a godsend! (Even though I can't seem to find what I want this time around!)

Anyone else? Especially looking for interior, landing gear and rotor detail.

The 1st Air Commando book by Schiffer Books has some really good shots of the R-4s used in the CBI.
