Sikorsky H-3??
Posted by senojrn on Friday, June 4, 2004 2:37 AM
Hey,
Can anybody recommend a good quality 1/72 scale Sikorsky HH-3 Jolly Green Giant????

I was looking on Ebay and found an Aurora kit--but I am very unfamiliar with that company. Any feedback on Aurora???

I think that a few years ago, I saw an Airfix kit (but past experience with Airfix has not been good as far as quality or details!). And if memory serves me correctly, I think Testors/Italeri had one too--or am I mistaken???

Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!! Thanks for your help and input!!

Aurora is one of the first plastic model companies, i think. people talk about remembering the "old aurora kit".

My impression is that the Aurora kit is pretty crude and more valuable in the box. Revell produced a 1/72 CH-3 which isn't readily available but shows up on EBay from time to time.

Lindberg make a version of the 1/72 H-3 ; boxed as the Sikorsky HH-3E Jolly Green Giant. They are Snap Fit kits but I still glued all my joins . The only disappointing part of the kit was the fit of the clear canopy ; theirs quite a large gap at the bottom edge of the windscreen where it meets the front fusalage . I placed a strip of plastic card across the inside before installing the canopy and filled the outside with a little putty .The pilots that come with the kit look a little small so I replaced them with two others from my spare's box .The kit comes with Desert Storm markings and a two tone brown camouflage scheme ; but I painted mine in the Vietnam camouflage instead . Using squadron/signal H-3 sea king in action as a painting guide.. Revell made a version of the CH-3C quite a few years ago ; I came across a picture of one in the Gallery section of FSM June 1998. I emailed Revell inquiring whether it would be available in the near future they replied that all product proposals and comments are collected and checked for their marketability .... so here's hopeing ? Anyway I've built 2 versions of the Lindberg kit , the other I airbrushed black all over , {black maria was another version of the H-3 that operated in Vietnam as well ] They look great in my display cabinet next to my five 1/72 H-53 helicopters.. ''can't get enough of the H-3's / H-53's love em!!

Here's another possibility from Heli-Kit News #14:

Another update concerns the 1:72 ZTS Plastyk / Starfix HH-3E Jolly Green Giant (see HKN #12 & 13). Quite by coincidence I was in Toys 'R' Us this week and there was the Starfix version on the shelf, price £1.99. The kit is #900/02, and comparison with the Aurora version shows that it is indeed a copy, as reported, though some parts have been moulded a little differently, for example the floor, cargo door, and canopy sections are separate in the Aurora one, but are integral with the fuselage in the Starfix. However, contrary to the remarks which were quoted earlier, the quality is a pleasant suprise. Admittedly the moulding is not quite so crisp, and there are some sink-marks which will need to be rectified, but considering that the Aurora will cost you something like 10 times as much, if you can find one at all, the Starfix looks like a pretty good deal, and is certainly preferable to the only other readily available kit, from Lindberg.

The main problem with all existing 1/72 HH-3 Jolly Green models is that they don't include the FOD fairing in front of the engine intakes. Not too bad to fix since sheet styrene can be substituted and it's all (pretty much) flat angles.

What we REALLY need is a good quality new production 1/48 HH-3E Jolly and HH-3F Pelican. Can I get an Oo-Rah?
1/35 scale would be asking for too much. Or would it????

I don't think that 1/35 is asking too much. Heller did a Super Frelon!
But, I would settle for a 1/48 if I had to.

You know the USAF HH-3E Jolly Green Giant and the USCG HH-3F Pelican were such workhorses in years past. I don't know why modeling companies don't produce them! I would LOVE to see at least one new (good quality) 1/72 kit of the HH-3 and at least one 1/48 kit!!! I grew up as a military BRAT and during the most formative years of my youth, we lived on an Air Station where the taxiway cut across the main road of the base. I would ride my bike down to the taxiway and wait for and watch the C-130's and H-3's go by. It was GREAT!!!
Who do we need to talk to / petition to get these kits in production! I know that the company that produced these kits would get a LOT of my money!

Just finished digging through my stash of stored kits and found a few I forgot I had. Among the treasures is a Revell 1/72 CH/HH-3 "Jolly Green". I built one years ago and recall that the only big problem was fist sized rivets that covered the thing. The kit is sealed in the original box so I am reluctant to open it to do an evaluation. I also found some other goodies I forgot about...Tamiya 1/48 OH-6 Loach, Revell 1/32 OH-6, Aurora 1/48? Chinook, A bunch of H-53's and H-3's by Fujimi, and some old Airfix 1/72 scale stuff. I need to spend more time at the bench. I've got a Hasegawa Hind A about ready to close up(need to finish the rear flight station), a kit bashed AH-1E Cobra, and a real pain in the dupa Aurora
AH-56 Cheyenne. One of these days I'm gonna do a shake 'n bake OOB job and quit messin' with these monster reworks.

I tried to order a couple from Great Models and while they were listed as available, my order shows them listed as "searching for/collectors item".
