                        Is it just me, or is the Apache big in a funky kind of way?

                        It isn't just the additional 6 feet in length, although that did have some impact. The Apache is significantly wider than the Cobra and weighs considerably more as well. Through the years, the AH-1 has maintained that same basic slim head-on view, making it a relatively small target. With an Apache coming at you, you're usually well aware of it, even if you are quaking in your boots!

                        The Marines also insisted on retaining the TOW capability, something that the Army wanted nothing to do with once the Apache was chosen. That's one reason our Marine Corps brethren try to say the Cobra is a "more capable" platform. Tongue [:P]Wink [;)] It still has to hover to taxi....

                        Sorry...didn't mean you offended me! Just thought I'd give my opinion on her looks. I will admit she doesn't have the classic sleak lines of modern rotary aircraft. Of course, the stealth aircraft aren't exactly sleak...but one heck of a punch!

                        haha this is true screamin... don't get me wrong I'm a blackhawk guy but I work directly with the chinook crews and we go at it all the time about which is "better" to crew. The fact is .. they all serve thier purpose and are great machines.

                        Yeah Jon, the Apache does have one advantage over the Hind. The Apache doesn't need wings to fly Evil [}:)]. But that is just the opinion of a Blackhawk guy.

                        I agree. I saw a half-dozen hover taxiing to their parking places at the airport here one day. There's a certain "oh sh**" quality when you see them moving, espeically low and slow in unison. They're the 800 pound gorilla and they know it. Not saying it was intentional, but it was a definate side effect. Same thing with the B-2. It's creepy watching that thing approach. Photos and static displays just don't do those designs justice.

                        I dont know why, but I have my 1/72 Seahawk, Huey, Cobra, Kiowa, and little bird next to each other, and the Apache just looks like it is out of scale, because it is so big!.. Hhhhmmm.. Thanks for the replies guys!

                        She is one big beast alright, in a sexy kinda way!! Saw some fly at Farnborough Air show last year. I have to say that the US really stole the show (although the 64's were from her Majesty's Royal Army). I got to sit in one too (a great thing for a civvie). I would love to go up in one. Ahhh, dream on Dan!!

                        I read that it was close to the length of an F15.
                        I believe that sheer size was one of the factors in the Corps NOT picking the '64 and staying with the Cobra.

                        The fuselage length of the Apache is 15.47 m and with the rotors turning the total length is 17.73m.
                        The length of an F-16 is 14.80m.

                        Its BIG and UGLY but it gets the job done and then some!

                        Yes, the Apache is a large machine. We had a couple parked on our flightline for a week....and they kind of made our cobras look small.

                        Hey guys.. Today I just bought the Tamiya 1/72 Apache, Nightfox, and the Kiowa..

                        Just looking at the sizes, I understand the little bird is a little machine.. The Jet Ranger was a normal sized helicopter to me.. But the Apache just simply makes the Jet Ranger (Kiowa) look miniture?.. It kinda doesnt look like they are in the same scale?.. It the Apache that much bigger than a conventional helicopter like a Jet Ranger?
