Heli-drab????
Posted by Lloyd on Monday, July 11, 2005 5:44 AM
Hi
I've read through some threads here on the academy 1/35 Blackhawk, so I thought maybe someone here could give me some info on mixing the colour for the UH-60L.
Ive seen it refered to as heli-drab or helo-drab. It looks like a very blackish olive drab (duh!) I'd also like to get the colour scaled correctly for this kit.
Im wondering if anyone has their own approach or can give me some tips on getting the colour right? I'll probably use tamiya acrylics or humbrol.

Thanks for your help. Great forum too ! Cheers

Testors ModelMaster line of paint has Helo Drab in its line-up. You can get it in acrylic, too. Now, I don't know if that paint is available where you live, but that would be my preferred route instead of trying to mix-n-match with Tamiya (don't get me wrong, I use a ton of Tamiya's acrylics, I got hooked on them while living overseas).

Hope this helps a little.

My LHS recommended Polly Scale RLM70 Black Green and I have to admit that it looks right. It's acrylic.

I am not familiar with the Poly Scale but I know that the Testors paint is almost ideal. I compared it with one that had just returned from the paint shop and it was just a little bit lighter than the real thing, just right for modeling. Testors Helo drab is also easy to fade, just a little bit of gray gets the look of ten years of service spot on.

Agree with the others. The Testor's paint is the way to go. It is spot on.

If you need to mix try 2 parts OD to 1 part flat black, matched it to the original color back in the mid 70's

excellent thanks. Just out of interest, are model paints generally identical to the original colour, or is the shade adjusted? I think it has to be lightened slightly the smaller the scale is. Just wondering about that anyway. Thanks
