Blackhawk Inquiry
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 18, 2005 10:31 PM

I was wondering, does any of the 1/35 scale Blackhawk kits come with the parts and markings to make a Medevac version? I can't figure this out with the descriptions on web sites. Thanks in advance!

Nope.  Academy has 3 versions; UH-60A/L (reboxed by Italeri as well, it really builds into an A model with HIRSS), MH-60G (which still builds incorrectly into an A model due to the narrower step fairings), and MH-60L DAP (labelled incorrectly as an AH-60 DAP by Academy and is still missing the widened step fairings of an L model).  I actually have that idea on the to-do list.  Mine will be one with external tanks as well.  I have already drawn up the decals too, just need to print them out.  Gathering parts for the patient stacker and other carried gear as well.

I was thinking about the same thing, because I got a chance to see one of the new HH-60L that the CA ARNG has. They're very finished looking on the inside, with a lot of plastic.

Thanks for the help. Seems strange that no body has made a Blackhawk with the Medevac markings. I guess I could make decals for it. Ideas are turning!

I am the Navy Liaison Instructor at the Army Flight Medic School @ FT. Rucker, AL. and a Flight Paramedic  There are no ready packaged kits or AM conversions out there but the standard litter carousel for the 60 is extremely easy to build. I started my first one on the Hasegawa 1/72 kit and it was a breeze. The UH-1 litter stanchions are also simple.

The HH-60L are really nice but will take alot of time with all of the medical extras like the hydraulic litter stanchions, medical cabinet (which is not usually used because it tends to tear loose in a crash!), On- board Oxygen Generating System (OBOGS), and suction. The cabin on the real thing is loaded with enough detail to keep a scratch builder happy for eons. There is also the portable med gear like the monitors to consider.  Not alot in the photo department since these are very expensive birds and are slow on the list for unit upgrades.

Due to high operational tempos, the Navy has also recently converted some of it's 60's to MEDEVAC configuration to give the Army air ambulance guys a little relief in the sand box. Just build the carousel  for the cabin and paint the Navy HH-60 in current standard USN grey colors.

I will dig up some pictures and post them on the helo forum as soon as possible.

I also have some great CH-46 pics from the Casualty Evacuation Team I ran while in Iraq. The Academy 1/48 Bull Phrog comes with the litters and stanchions. Both sets of decals are from my previous sqaudrons (HMM-261 and HMM-162) and the OOB kit makes a very accurate CASEVAC Phrog. Just move the .50's a little lower in the left hand gun door.

FLY STRAIGHT, BE BRAVE, GO NAVY!
