Tense moments in flight school...
Posted by Cobrahistorian on Friday, July 21, 2006 5:14 PM

Hey guys,

Well, my final checkride for IERW is on Monday.  No more TH-67 "Freedom Fighter".  Had a really good flight today and I'm ready for Monday.  We had "aircraft selection day" today.  Basically we all found out what we were going to fly operationally.  Of course, being a Guard guy and being assigned to an Apache unit, I knew what I was getting....

...right?

Well, someone, somewhere on the food chain decided that 2LT Bernstein would be better served flying a Blackhawk!  I swear, when I heard that, it was about the closest to a heart attack I've ever come.  Fortunately, my buddy had a similar reaction when they told him he was gonna fly -64s.  Someone, somewhere screwed up and mixed us up!

Anyhow, all is sorted out now and I start the AH-64D course on August 8th!

Hmmm....sounds no different than when I was in flight school at Rucker in 1987.  Best of luck to you!

Hawks wouldn't be all that bad,  at least you don't have quite so many electronic gizmos to worry about all working at the same timeBig Smile [:D]

Jon,

I'm guessing that by the time you read this your checkride should be over and you should be enjoying a well deserved adult (aviator) beverage. Be advised that gunnies do not drink soda pop to celebrate ANYTHING!!! You may have a glass of wine, but it must be consumed from a dirty glass.

Before I offer congratulations I am dying to ask --- What would lead you to believe that the Army beaurocracy could get anything right on the first try?  You are obviously a rookie and need more experience ;)  congrats!

Well.....

We are waiting with bated breath.  I am just disappointed that I can't meet you at the pad with a fire hose!

Hey guys!

Ok, got an 89 on my checkride.  I'm done with BWS and rather thankful for it.  This phase was by far the best flying, but the most frustrating as far as a learning environment.  My IP got the last laugh too.  I should have gotten a 91, but because he never trained me on a particular radio procedure, I ended up getting a C for it, which dropped my grade 2 points.

No more TH-67 though!  I've got 2 weeks to learn Chapters 5&9 for the AH-64D.  Should be challenging, but doable.

Snakedriver, definitely gonna have quite a few bev's tonight.  Mac, a firehose???  I'll let ya know when I check out of the -64 course!

Thanks guys!

Congradulations, Jon, all I can do tonight is a blue horizon on the rocks, though Training plans still include heading for Marana later this year?

Congratulations LT!  Great to hear that you have made it through the tough part.  Kinda disappointed you won't be joining the ranks of us Hawkdrivers but I know the -64 is your airframe of choice.  Drop me a line if you get a chance.  Hope to be coming up to Rucker in the next month for some TACOPS stuff.  Congrats again and the beer is on me!

Thanks man!  Lookin forward to seeing ya finally!

As a side note, here's Household 6 and me at the BBQ and Music Festival yesterday.  Unfortunately, she and the future in-laws just left this morning.  I don't know what I was more excited about, the fact that she was here for the weekend or that we're sitting in a brand new Lot 8+ Longbow with the new displays and radio equipment! (I'm such a geek)

I will say, look who's in the driver's seat!

well from a pilots standpoint i would go with the second choice, from a non-pilots standpoint i think my choice would've been the first. Congrats.
