Sorry, no pics.  This was many, many years ago (about 15), way before digital cameras and such.  No pics of it.

Hi Gino,

I don't suppose you took loads of pics of it before you handed the model over? Any chance of a link to them??

Cheers,  Rich

Just another question...would they ever use both helos on one mission ,the Sea Horse and CH-46?

Not usually.  Usually, one helo unit with one type of helo supported one infantry unit.

The Airfix CH-46A is pretty nice.  I did a dio with one for a customer with some Marines coming down the ramp.  It was for his dad who flew them in Vietnam.  I did his aircraft.  He loved it.

Hi Dick,

Many thanks for that. That will be perfect for me as the pegasus set supposedly depicts the Marines c 1965, so that should fit in OK. The set depicts a few Marines bent over and running, so they could either be under fire or running out the back of a CH-46 or probably both. I think it would make quite a good dio.

Have you made this model at all? Any tips greatly apprciated.

Just another question...would they ever use both helos on one mission ,the Sea Horse and CH-46?

Cheers,   Rich

Rich  -  Note that the Airfix CH-46 represents the A model with the narrower rear pylon (?), which is appropriate for the earlier part, at least, of the Viet Nam war.  There are lots of action photos of them.  You can also drop the ramp if you need troop acccess.  If you wanted the later D/E/F models, Fujimi makes them in 1/72.  Don't know when they started in USMC service.

Regards, Dick

Yes.  The H-34s had a pretty long life and I think there were quite a few still around during the  TET offensive of '68 (not '69).

From Global Security webiste--

"In August 1969, the last Marine UH-34D in Vietnam was retired from HMM-362 at Hue Phu Bai."

Thanks fellas,

Just picked up an old airfix Sea Knight off Ebay for a few quid. I know this probably isn't the best model of this helo, but it's a start.

Thanks for the input. As always, it's appreciated.

Before they used the E model(not avialable at first) the did fly some B and C models borrowed from the Army(in addition they used the G model Snake until the J was avialable). They never used D or H models(to the best of my knowledge) and the N arrived too late for Marine use.

Many thanks, that's what I was thinking. I'll need to get hold of a Sea Horse or a Sea Knight I think.

The only UH-1s the USMC used were the UH-1E gunships (modified C version, with single-windowed door).  They mainly used the H-34 Sea Horse, then later the CH-46 Sea Knight for transport/utility duties.

Did Marines use uh-1d/h in VietNam
Posted by richgb on Friday, August 25, 2006 3:37 AM

Hi fellas,

I've an idea in my head of a dio with Marines exiting a Huey. I'd like to use the Pegasus Marines in VietNam set. My question is, did Marines fly their own UH-1D/H or did they use the Army for transport? I've got quite a few Huey books, but apart from gunships, I couldn't find any with Marine markings on them. I know they used Sea Horses  (Italeri do a nice model of it and this would be around the same era c 1965). They also used ch-46's, was this the prefered method of transport for the Corps?

Thanks for any help.

Rich
