Skis on HH-65
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 8:47 PM

Never seen this before.  Now I work around COastie HH-65s frequently up here in Alaska but I've NEVER seen them with Skis before.  We've got skis on our Pavehawks and the Amry has them on their Chinooks, UH-60s and OH-58Ds up here, but I've never seen a Coastie bird with them.

DKMacin have you?  I'm wondering if they can still retract the landing gear.  ANyway, these birds were operating up north of Barrow in the Arctic Ocean off the USCGC Healy during the Hidden Ocean Arctic 2005 Exploration.  They were from AVDET 162.  They had one with skis and one without.

Skis!?

Ever since the 6519 "fell" through the ice on the first arctic deployment they have talked about ski's. (The pilot was told not to land on the thin ice but nooo, she wouldn't listen. So she was the first female pilot to land on the ice and the first to break a solid composite part on the aircraft tooWhistling [:-^]) Anyway, skis have been part of the 65 inventory since then, we never used them in Alaska when I was there, nor the other northern climes either. The gear cannot be retracted with the skis on. Thus maximum forward airspeed is reduced, something that no one likes. I don't recall how long it took to remove or install them, but it wasn't that long an operation. I think I remember the stuts had collars on them to lock the gear down, but it is fast approaching 10 years as retired. . .insert old smiley here.

I know it's only rock and roll, but I like it.

Thanks Don.  Yeah, I wondered about that.  Maybe that's why the Cutter's birds were split with one having skis and the other not having them on that research excursion.
