Usually it's the same color as the hull, however, the Navy has a retention award called the Golden Anchor Award. The honored ship gets to paint their anchor(s) gold. I know the Enterprise won the award in 2004, and possibly other years. You may have seen pictures from that time period, or another similar one. Check out this link.

Hisorical note, when CV-6 USS Enterprise was scrapped, her steel was melted down and used in the construction of CVN-65 USS Enterprise

The squadron was HS-15. From the globalsecurity.org page on HS-15:

In the spring of 1992, HS-15 began the transition to the SH-60F / HH-60H Seahawk helicopter. After traveling to NAS North Island in San Diego, California to undergo training for the new aircraft, the squadron returned in late 1992 and completed transition in March 1993.

In fall of 1994, .... CVW-17 and HS-15 moved on to the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) in September 1994. The Red Lions completed a Mediterranean Sea/Persian Gulf deployment in December 1996. Over the course of that cruise, the squadron flew almost 2000 hours and was involved in Operations DECISIVE ENDEAVOR and SOUTHERN WATCH, and participated in exercises with the Israeli military

BTW, since you're doing the entire air wing, HS-15 was part of CVW-17. The other squadrons were:

VF-103 (F-14)
VFA-81 (F/A-18)
VFA-83 (F/A-18)
VFA-34 (F/A-18)
VAW-125 (E-2C)
VS-30 (S-3B)
VAQ-132 (EA-6B)
VQ-6 (ES-3A)

On the 96 Med cruise VFA-75 "The Sunday Punchers" was also aboard, when the cruise ended in Dec. it ended a chapter in Naval Air history, for they flew the A-6E and on the tail was painted "Last Of The Intruders"

Yep, it was removed during a 30 month refit at Puget Sound that began in January 1979

You may be right about 1990. Not all SH-3 where decomm'ed and replaced by SH-60's at the same time, even after being repaced in general squadron use some remained in service preforming other duties. Some 53's did sail on the Enterprise for a short while in 1995, but I don't remember the reason why, I was surprised myself when my son told me that they had a couple aboard

Hey John I think she went into the yard for refit in 1990 because I was on the USS Abraham Lincon for a short cruise around the Chesapeake Bay along with a whole lot of very important senators and she (Enterprise) sailed right by us on her way to the Newport News Shipyard. And I think the SH3 was decommissioned in 92 because in 91 they were still with all of the carrier air wings. Oh and BTW guys the MH-53's are only found on Helicoptor Assault Ships like the Tarawa class and the IWO Jima Class and probably a few other smaller assault boats. The SH3 was replaced by the SH-60 Seahawk in 92.

prowannab,

first off which squadron are you trying to do?  I ask because if you know the squadron, most squadrons will have their history up somewhere either an official website or other websites.  just google the squadron.

The H-60 started replacing the H-3 in about 1990. I was on the Nimitz in 91 and it was HS-4s first or second deployment with the H-60 (foxtrot and hotel models).  I beliveve that CAG 5 in Japan was the last Squadron to get 60's. I'm sure it took a few years for all the HS squadrons to get H-60s.  The only squadrons operating the H-53 were and still are mine-countermeasures (HM) and helicopter combat support squadrons (HC). HM and HC squadrons are not normally part of the air wing.

I hope this helps some.

jose

The USS Enterprise has NOT been deactived and is still in service. Slated to be there until at least 2012. She went into the yard around t hat time for a major refit and rejoined the fleet in 1995. After that standard helo's would ahve been Seahawks although a few 53's where on boaed for a while. This is first hand knowledge since I got to tour her in 96 while my son was stationed aboard her. When my son joined the ship it was at sea and he was flown out to her on a SH-3
