Any tips for superdetailing a AH-60L DAP?
Posted by senojrn on Thursday, March 29, 2007 9:18 AM

I just received the Academy/MRC 1/35 AH-60L DAP kit as a present from some friends and I am really looking forward to building it!  I saw intruder_bass' outstanding super-detailed MH-60L (and other helos) on his webpage and HeavyArty's awesome USAF HH-60G here in the forum; both of which really motivated me to build this kit!

I've already looked at Cobra Company's resin MH-60L conversion sets, but after looking through the sprues, I think everything that Cobra Company has put in resin is included in this kit in injection molded plastic.  I also have looked at Eduard's PE set and am considering buying that.

I am wanting to build this bird marked for the 160th SOAR (Cobra Company decal set 3501).  I usually build fixed wing (in 1/48th) and WWII figures/armor/dios (in 1/35) but have recently been branching out to helos (in all scales), so any tips, thoughts, recommendations, ideas or pointers would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!  Thanks in advance!

Now, I just have to find a place to display it once it's done....

It is actually an MH-60L DAP.  Not the AH-60L, as the Army doesn't use the AH- designation for the Blackhawk.  The MH-60L can be converted into a DAP by adding the weapons pylons and the weapons.  If you want to super detail it, look for Intruder_Bass's roof plans and then just scratch build the roof.  I would recommend the Exterior PE, I haven't used the Interior PE yet, so I cannot say how it is.  Also, the decals in the kit are basically worthless.  They need more of an olive drab color.  If you look at HeavyArty's MH-60L, he used the correct decals (olive drab) and you can see the difference as he used the yellow kit decals on the fuel tank.  The Cobra Company decals are good, but they do not have the "danger keep away".

The Cobra Company resin sets have better detail than the kit parts.  I would recommend them.

Here are two motivational pics (I found them on the MilitaryPhotos.net forum) (edit: The first pic, I think the tail number is 26363, which was Super 66, and had the name GUN SLINGER during Operation Gothic Serpent, the photo is from Afghanistan, and IDK where the second one is, probably Iraq)

I agree with Austin.  The CC sets are much better detailed than the kit parts.  They also provide some parts that are not in the kit.  At a minimum, you should get the UH-60L Correction/Detail set, as it has the extended step sponsons needed for a correct L model.  The kit represents an A model with the narrower step sponsons.  L models have about 10" wider ones due to an added roll stabilizer.  It also gives nice one-piece intakes and a new rear cabin bulkhead.  The square stabilator is nice too, but about the same as the kit one.

Here is my MH-60L DAP as a reference as well.

Here is a mini build log of it as well.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the links and all the info!  I really appreciate it.  Are there any book references that you might suggest?  I already have the Squadron Signal H-60 in Action and UH-60 Blackhawk Walk Around.
