Toys R Us Black Hawk
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, October 20, 2003 1:56 AM
Has anybody seen the Black Hawk from toys r us? My wife just bought one for me (it was supposed to be for Christmas, but I found it in the trunk of her car today). This thing is awesome. I know it's not a model but it is HUGE. I can't see a parent buying this for their kid because I don't think anybody under the age of 9 could fly it around without spending time at a gym. The detail is great and since I have the little bird from toys r us, I now have the correct helicopters to recreate the movie Black Hawk Down.

Hey Woody,

Don't do that to me. I just about had my espresso go through my nose. Nice reply. Now every time I look at my Black Hawk, I'll think of you coming over to play. LOL

You think that's cool, wait till you see BBI's Apache and LAV scaled to 1/18th. They look cool and are fairly easy to customize but man they do take up the SPACE!!! I "used to" collect the 1/18th but I either moved into a bigger house or whittled down the collection. Just imagine havine 20 or 30 1/16th Tigers and Shermans sitting around. Plus there's always the embarrasment of wandering around TRU. There's also a 1/18th Cobra and A-10 Thunderbolt.

The 1/18 black hawk was $59.00. I'm glad the wife bought it.

I found a site/forum on 1/18 stuff and a guy built a 1/18 B-17. He made a diorama out of it. I also saw the Apache. I would almost rather have a Cobra over the Apache. I like the old Bell stuff. Check this site out.

10-4 on the Apache! It's either in the works from BBI (Dragon Action figures, etc.) or 21St Century Toys. It will probably be 60 to 70 bucks but it is coming. These 1/18th action figure mfgs. are moving into the modern equipment. Their Cobra should be out neaer Xmas ( if I read the posts right).

I've been trying to talk 21st Century Toys into doing a 1/18 Cobra for 2 years now. Glad to hear someone's gonna do it! My UH-1C's getting lonely.

But that Apache.... WOW.

Anyone know if its an A or a D model?

Well, I just checked out the 'Hawk at Toys R Us. Rather cool, and certainly big, but it needs a better paint job. If I get one, I think I'll probably convert it to a 50th Med Co. UH-60L or Q. I was really hoping to have three or four of em with a bunch of Little Birds flying across my ceiling, but that seems a bit cost prohibitive. Oh well.... one can dream!

Hey Jon,

Doesn't Toys R Us have on the spot financing? LOL. Speaking of paint. I like weathering but I wish these people would let us do our own. I can just see a disgruntled or very bored employee at the factory with a paint brush and silver paint.

Mark,

Yeah, know what you mean. My 1/18 UH-1C was all wrong as far as the weathering goes. I gave her a new coat of OD paint and I'm in the middle of marking her as one of the 174th AHC "Sharks", with big ol' sharks teeth. Weathering her's gonna be much easier now.

I've got a great shot of a 50th Med Co Medevac 'Hawk serving in Iraq with the 101st, so I think I'm going to mark my 'Hawk as that one once I get it. It makes good use of the ESSS wings, etc. I haven't seen any UH-60Qs in Iraq though. It seems that all of the medevac birds over there are still L models. Oh well, no nose turret then...

Its 5AM. I got up an hour earlier than I needed to.... There's something wrong with me... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Jon,

Sounds like you know what you want with the Black Hawk. I also have the Huey and it just hangs above my flight helmets and models. I wish they would come out with the D or H model. I'm a huge fan of the slicks and cobras. ROTC? I guess if I ever see you I'll have to snap one on ya(when you get your bar). I'm a SSG in a ordnance reserve unit. We spent a couple of weeks at Ft. Hood a few years back and it was hard to get any work out of me due to the Apaches flying around. We've had to do some sling training with the Hawk and I was aked to do some filming on it. I spent a couple of hours flying in the gunners seat to film. WOW. What a nice bird. Well, good luck getting into flight school. You should have went warrent. They get more respect. LOL

I just saw pics of the 1/18th AH-64A. Impressive bird and it looks like they got most of the dimensions fairly accurate. BUT THEY PUT THE CREW ACCESS DOORS ON THE WRONG SIDE!!!!! Yes, with this Apache the crew doors are now on the left side of the bird, not the right as with every other Apache out there. Gonna be an interesting fix! Hopefully that's just the prototype and it'll be fixed on the production birds. Keepin my fingers crossed!

The price of the choppers really isn't that bad considering it's already assembled but they really require a lot of space for display. I found a pic the other day of the Apache with the entire canopy hinged at the rear besides the incorrect opening side crew access doors. You would think they would get details like that correct.

From what I've heard, the Apache was just released last week, as was 21st Century Toys' AH-1W both in 1/18th! Both seem to need a bit of work, but are good representations of each. Both of the Cobra's rear windows open, instead of one in front and one in back, but it looks great otherwise.... now to attempt a backdating to a G model! Wink [;)]

Can't wait to get my hands on the Apache! I'm heading over to TRU right now!

Mike,

Thanks very much! I've just been given the official go-ahead for my Apaches book for Osprey, so that's my next major project. By the way, I haven't forgotten those T-38 photos, just been busy as hell. I'll get em to you as soon as I can, though. Drop me an email off list and I'll be happy to sign it for ya!

Picked up the TAU Blackhawk yesterday and she is a beaut!. Then I discovered i was lucky enough to get 1 that wasnt pre-weathered!. I'm not sure if this was a production mistake or not, but i'm not complaining.
She's the latest in my 1/18 colection which also includes the LAV, and 21st Century's Huey, M48 Tank and Bradley. Cant wait for the Cobra but the question is, in a 1 bedroom apt WHERE AM I GONNA PUT IT?!............LOL.....

Redbird,

Yeah, know the feeling. I've got a P-38, F4U and UH-1C hanging from my ceiling already and the AH-1, AH/MH-6, AH-64, and UH-60 on the way! My apartment's getting too small for this stuff! I was hoping to do the whole Blackhawk Down motif across my ceiling, but at $60 a pop for the Hawks and $30 each for the Little Birds, its not gonna happen.

I just went to Toys R' Us last night and they had (9) AH-64s on the shelf for $59.00 each. I'm looking for the AH-1W and the Blackhawk...has anyone seen them in the San Diego Area? Thanks!

Carl,

The AH-1W is available exclusively from Wal Mart. I stopped by the local Wal Mart last night and they had the Me-109 and the P-47D. I haven't seen the AH-1W in the store yet, but I know it's out. Have you tried ebay?

Can't wait to get my Apache!

Dragonfire--

What part of San Diego are you? The two Toys R Us's in Chula Vista should have both the Little Bird and Black Hawk. I bought the Little Bird ($20) a couple of months ago but $60 is too much for me to pay for a 1:18 scale "toy." Maybe if it comes down in price...

Polyphenus,

I live around Qualcomm Stadium. I went to the store off Mira Mesa (by Miramar). Going to try the one over by Linda Vista this weekend. I'll also try Chula Vista as well. Thanks!

Jon,

The AH-1W is the large 1/18 scale, correct? I've seen the 1/48 scale die cast Cobras in the Wal-Mart off I-15 in San Diego. Will keep an eye out though. Thanks!

Carl,

Yup, 21st Century Toys has an exclusive contract with Wal Mart now for the 1/18th series (they're stopping distribution to Toys R Us from what I've heard). The XD line is now produced for Wal Mart under the "Motor Works" line, even though it is technically 21st Century's XD line. Can't wait to get my hands on the Cobra. I may try to backdate one of em to a G eventually!

All these 1:18 scale choppers, now if they would only add the good ol CH-47 CHINOOK in the mix than life would great!!!!!!!!
