For this 1/72 road I used Celluclay and epoxy for the "water". Cover with a nice coat of gloss, and it was finished! The mud on the tracks was the same-Celluclay and gloss.

We all have our preferences, but I've found that talcum powder (baby powder) mixed with acrylic paint produces the best mud.  Unless you've scored some really fine-grain sand, most soil would appear as "gravel" in scale.  Talcum powder mixes well with paint, and can be layered to build up different areas, and splattered onto vehicles.  Coating it with a thin layer of modge podge will give it that wet, shiny look if that's what you're after.

Happy building!

hey sn00x    you have several choices that I can think of:

1. acrylic modelling paste--kind of pricey but holds it shape beautifully. cleans up easily

2. Celluclay or Scuplyamold--the standard for groundwork. easy to work with and clean up

3. plaster of Paris--the cheapest of the lot. not a lot of working time though.

4. real dirt mixed with white glue. cant get any more realistic than that! use "clean" dirt though.

whatever you decide to use,you will have to apply a layer of gloss gel or Future over your groundwork to ensure it looks "wet".  experiment before settling on a technique and good luck!
