Russian Partisans
Posted by firesmacker on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 4:54 PM

Guys,

I did a search here and looked at a few online suppliers and can't find what I am looking for. I am currently building the Has 1/48 Ju-87B and it is giving me fits. Everything I have read says it is a great kit so I know it is my ham-fisted efforts screwing everthing up.

That being said, instead of flying this thing into a wall, I had an idea for a Diorama. I just need some Russian Partisans (among other things) To start the ball rolling. Preferably in winter clothing.

Any suggestions? I checked Squadron, Sprue Brothers and Great Models and came up blank. Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Jeff

1/48th, eh?  Tough one.. All I can suggest is the Tamiya 1/48th Russian Troops and German Troops sets and doin' a figure kitbash... Seems the Russian/Eastern European guerillas could be done in a mixed bag of Russian/German uniform bits with some civilian colors thrown is, and a mix of Russian/German weapons on hand..

I only remember the old ESCI set in 1/35. Long OOP.They were generic partisans, in more of spring/summer/fall clothing. Since Italeri has the molds perhaps one day they will re-issue the set.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I guess I can go with Russian infantry. I thought partisans would look cooler. Since this will be my first Dio, maybe I should stick with KISS. And tackle kit-bashing sometime in the future. I was thinking of a crashed plane, pilot dead/knocked out, radioman missing and a few guys standing around examining the aircraft and one of them looking at the direction of the footsteps fading into the distance. Thanks again.

Check RJ Products here--they have some reallly diverse, interesting figures--you might find something appropriate?

Check these two French Resistance figters in the list there--with new heads, they could easily be Russian partisans!

It's all good Bro. This isn't something I have to do right away. Just a thought I had for something to while away the time. I'm in no hurry and I'm sure something will turn up. If nothing else, it gave me an exscuse to stick that damn Stuka in a drawer and start on my Helldiver. Thanks again.

Dunno if you considered my idea or not, but modifying military figures into civilians is actually pretty easy with a bit of knife and putty-work, much easier than the other way around, for sure... Shave off insignia and epaulettes with the knife, make soft-caps to replace helmets with a bit of putty and sheet plastic for a bill or brim, and "hair" for bare heads outta putty, un-blouse trousers with putty "pantlegs", and painting jackets and trousers in "civilian" colors, like a dark blue jacket, tan pants, maybe a red & white polka-dotted scarf here or there...  One guy with a Russian "bear hat" and a PPSh would establish their nationality in a heartbeat, and the Partisan-connection could be the mix of PPShs,Mosin Nagants, K-98s, and MP-40s.  Partisans used whatever weapons and ammo they could scrounge up, and using military personal equipment from both sides was the norm... Even sex-changes are fairly easy, especially with the bulky clothing worn in Russia during the inclement weather.. Just takes a ittle putty-work on the hair, really...  One could do Chetniks as well..

Learning how to convert figures is a necessity for the diorama builder... That way you're never tied to making the story fit your figures... You've got a good idea, and it's not a common one... I'd say, "run with it"... You could even model it as a crash-landing with the pilot being taken prisoner by the Partisans, with a dead gunner, or vice-versa...  I think it would be a helluva dramatic scene, since being captured by the Russians was bad enough for the Germans, but to be captured by armed civilians, in the middle of nowhere, right after your unit hit targets in the area? (Shudder)  Better hope the military gets to you soon...

Yeah Hans, I did consider your suggestions but I guess I was trying to take the easy way out. You make a really good point about converting figures being a necessity so I guess i'm gonna have to sack up and start cutting some plastic. What kind of putty should I use for making things like hats, modified pant legs etc?

I'm going to do a little more searching online and hit up my LHS and Hobby Lobby and see what I can find. Thanks again.

I use Bondo automotive glazing putty m'self, but I also use the old standby Testor's model putty with good results for figure mods as well... I like the small tip it has for that, which allows me to squeeze out small ribbons of putty right where I want to start working it... You can also try working with facial tissue andd white glue for pants legs and changing overcoat lengths and stuff.  If you need to lay some putty in a thin sheet, get some wax paper and work it on that...

Thanks Mike,

I have found a few kits that will meet my needs. Mostly WW2 German Infantry and WW2 Russian Infantry. I like that all the weapons, etc are on a seperate sprue. I plan on hitting up the LHS and Hobby Lobby on Saturday after work. Got the Boy Scouts coming for their Merit Badges but, after that, I am free and clear.

COMNAVHOUSEPAC will be gone all day with the kids so I have almost all Saturday to myself. I'm also going to spend time devouring Shep Paine's diorama book for more insight. I'm really getting fired up to do this. I always wondered where in the hell people get their inspirations for a Dio, and this one came to me all at once. Thanks again and stand by for me to pick yer brain constantly.

Mine come from various sources like movies, newreels, photos, and even my own real-life exeperiences in the Army,  as well as the ol' "bolt outta th' blue"...  But when you get 'em, it's usually, "SNAP!"... I have to write 'em down or I'll lose 'em though..
