Fullers Earth
Posted by Hans von Hammer on Thursday, January 29, 2009 7:25 PM

Have any of y'all ever used this stuff?  It's a kind of clay used in Hollywood FX to add a buncha dirt to explosions and such... The FX guys pour it into air cannons to make a huge dust cloud (it's especially obvious in the scene in Indianna Jones and the Last Crusade when Indy throws the pole into the Kraut motorcycle's front wheel and he flips up in the air end-over-end)...

Any how, it has the consistancy of flour and a good dirt color (it's really dirt, after all) and I used to have a fair amount of it when the Army changed from the M13 Chemical Decontamination Kit, there was a baggie of the stuff inside the kit with a dye capsule.  But I've long since lost all I had stashed when I cleared them out of the NBC Room back in the 80s... I thought I still had a couple, because I always saw the containers in my junk box, but never checked them until tonight, when I found them to be empty...

Anyone know of a source for this stuff, any FX shops in y'alls area?

Thnaks, I'll look it over... Seems more of a Indiana Jones Fan Site though.. I only used the Indy reference as an example of what Fullers Earth looks like when shot from an air cannon though...

I used to sell the stuff, along with about 100,000 other chemicals, but I don't sell chemicals anymore. Fuller's Earth is used to soak up leaking oil off of clutch plates and brakes in industrial applications, as well as other uses. I don't have a Merck Chemical Index handy, but it would list other uses and would give you an idea where to look for it.

It is an Indy fan site, but they use FE for "Authentic" weathering of their cloths and hat's.

They usually have resources for all the items used listed with links.

Kitty Litter is also refered to as Fullers Earth on the packaging. Wink [;)]

I never had to worry about anyone stealin' NBC equipment... My unit barely knew where the NBC Room was...

THe plus side of the job was that nobody really knew what I did, so I wrote my own ticket around there, takin' off to go "meet" with other NBC NCO's, or go to "Battalion" and such, or just hangin' out in the room...

Only time I really ever saw the First Sergeant or the Commander was formation or mask-draw, lol...

Also check some of the cosmetic sites and fly fishing supply (its used as a leader degreaser).

These are some GREAT links, Renarts!  Not just for what I was looking for, but one like "soapandmore" with it's clays, wow... That red clay alone would work really well for either the Central Highlands of Vietnam, Georgia, or some areas of Oklahoma I've been to...

I always told my guys that they didn't have to follow my instruction or advice, they were free to make their own threat assessments...   But I did suggest that they all make me the beneficiary for their SGLI (that's Servicemembers Group Life Insurance, for you civilian-types, worth up to a quarter million buck at the time)) before we deployed...Big Smile [:D]

For Fuller's Earth trivia..........

A trench built on a soundstage during filming of "The Wizard of Oz" was filled with the stuff that could be churned up to look like wind-whipped dirt in miniature.

As HvH mentioned....."as fine as flour".

Glad they helped. You never know where you'll find good resources for useful hobby ingredients.

Enjoy.
