"Mayhem in the Hood" wip 9-21 (humvee question)
Posted by camo junkie on Sunday, May 10, 2009 12:46 PM

hi guys. been working on this one for about the last 5 months. could've gotten it done many times over but keep getting busy doing other things. this dio is still a work in progress...as you can see by the pics. have more to do with the humvee and build and paint the figs...as well as build more figs. basically its a battle between (unseen) iraqi insurgents and us army personel. much of the building i had help with thanks to modelchasm and pssstoff. these guys have been helping me all 5 months and i cant thank them enough. however there will be plenty of time to do that when im actually finished!!! Laugh [(-D]  more figures to do than anything else. btw, i purposely "broke" my sign down and laid it where it is for right now just because it kept getting in the way...it will be fixed upon completion. anyway, any and ALL coments are welcome as i try to finish this thing! thanks guys!

the building is made entirely of styrene then a thin layer of plaster was applied. then painted and weathered. the palm tree is from verlinden and the road is made from a roof shingle...again painted and weathered. again its still a w.i.p. so im not going to go into super detail right now. hope you guys like it though. please let me know! Smile [:)]

and now this is where im currently at!

enjoy guys!

Hey! It's looking good- very nice palm, are those brass leaves? The look quite nice, glad they stuck on there, hope they wont pop off anymore. And I love the snipers on the roof!! Very cool- gotta love the .50 cal!

Not sure if you meant it, but the HMMWV is facing one way, the snipers another (perhaps facing backwards to cover a column of US guys to the rear of the Hummer?)

I know it’s still a WIP- but it’s a nice one at that! Always a fan of the Mk. 19- the Tamiya one’s alright, but I like the brass the Verlin kit offers (especially for the sight)- again, just let me know if you need the instructions- you can always mix and match pieces.

Now... I don’t remember- I’m pretty sure the kit came with a .50 cal and the Mk. 19 and I remember the instructions only having actual instructions for one or the other... like there was a second page I was supposed to get and never did... either quality control messed up or they figured you only needed one main weapon. (I’ll do a hi-res scan of the box top, that’s really what I use for instructions with Verlinden anyway...)
But I’m pretty sure it was the .50 cal that didn’t have a diagram, I put the Mk. 19 on top of my hummer- so I’ll take a shot of that for you too.

This is looking real nice so far! Don’t worry on it not being done yet, you still move faster than me!! lol

haha and I love the working title!

thanks p.o.  yep those brass leaves...lol. still working on positioning the snipers but the way i see it...fire will be coming from ALL directions so to help break up the directional squarness even more i plan on having them in different directions.

btw, i have the brass/resin verlinden mk-19....lousy...lousy....lousy kit!!!!!! let me start...the back door was too small to fit the model...the side doors were too small to fit the model...i dont have instructions for the mk-19...need i go on. i planned on doing everything in p.e. and resin. the tires i molded myself...came out great. anyway, wanted to use the mk-19 from verlinden...no instructions and the weapon facing the opp. direction on the box makes it really hard to make!!! so...i said screw it and did the inside with p.e. and resin and to hell with the rest. if you have those instructions though i'd appreciate it p.o.! i posted in the armor forum looking for a set and no one responded so i simply said forget it...plastic it is!!!! i'm all done with update kits!! spent $40 on it and it doesnt even fit the damn model...even though its "made for it"!!!

thanks btw, about the title...worked on that one almost as long as the dio!! Laugh [(-D]

I like that- fire from all directions- adds to the Mayhem title. But yea, as far as detail/update kids go- unless one wants to add a basic interior to one where there is none, Verlinden's been disappointing me. Disapprove [V]

yeah, i figured i'd have an iraqi soldier/interpreter being shot, a few guys taking cover behind the humvee and perhaps one guy shooting an at-4 and a couple of guys shooting in diff. directions. going to try and apply some paint to the humvee today and maybe work on some figs.

Wow- definitely will be a chaotic "ambushed and don't know where it's coming from or how many people there are" kind of moment- should be very dynamic, I like it.

REAL COOL diorama!  I am afraid my wife will NEVER let me build one that big like yours.  It would be cool if you can add one or two insurgents hiding on second or third floor patio to make your set more interesting.

I am new here and there is so much to see and learn.  Thanks for sharing...

hey no problem d.p. thanks for the input and the reply. its all appreciated! Tongue [:P] i was contemplating actually putting in another building and having the insurgents there...but this one has taken me loooooooooong enough!! Laugh [(-D] therefore, while not exactly what i want it will suffice for now!

as for your wife...maybe she's talked to mine because mine isnt all that "keen" on the "large" idea either...but what's done is done!! Whistling [:-^]

AND YEAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I MADE THE CROSS OVER!!!!!! HAHAHAH!!!!

.... and there's a HMMWV in there too!!!!! YEAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHHAHA!!!

As always camo, lookin' great! I'm glad that you gave me the "clue" as to where this one rean off too. I guess this is a better "home" for it anyway.

Nice progress thus far. I expect this one to come out great. I know that you're not big into shows, but I think that you should consider this one when it's done.

I also agree with dp ... I think that maybe a guy (or two ... just depending if two would make it too heavy/ crowded up there) hiding/ crouched down on one of the balconies would be a nice addition. However, consider this ... if you did that, the snipers probably wouldn't be on the roof. Whenever we used a building, whether it be two rooms or twenty, we cleared everything. Like I said, if you consider it, be sure to take that into consideration. Personally, I think that the snipers distract from what's going on street level, and if you did add insurgents, probably the second floor would be the best option ... IMO. This would allow most of the focus to be on the ground level and slowly "disipate" as the viewer goes up ... this will force him/ her to go back to the ground level. If you have them "searching" the dio for something "new" all the time, the point gets lost ...

... again ... all IMO.

Bottom line up front .... this thing is looking awesome, Camo. Please keep us informed.

(... Aaaahh, yet another forum for the "terrible trio" to take over! AH - HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!)

hehe!

thanks as always model....lol. im thinking (only) about what dp & u have said. maybe crouching down or perhaps aiming their weapons down. hmmm...! as for the snipers on the roof....yes i did figure that the "house would be cleared" hence them being on top and no one on the balconies. i like the ideas flowing no doubt!!

as far as a "show"...wouldnt know the first thing about 'em...who what where when why....never tried ya know! at any rate, let me finish this then we can talk show...LOL. Tongue [:P]

Personally, I don't have a warm fuzzy about the sniper team on the roof... That's just a bad hide (actually isn't a hide at all) and exposes them to enemy snipers on even higher buildings... Ok for Cops, like SWAT or HRT & such, bad idea for Soldiers...

I understand the confusion factor being diserable, but that's where the training kicks in to eliminate it with constant immediate action drills and counter-ambush drills...

That said, I really don't know what you're trying to depict yet, since the photos are hard for me to understand yet due to the height of the building and it's overall lighting... Could you get a piece of posterboard (sky blue's my personal favorite type) for a backdrop to cut out the bench background and shoot some wider shots from a lower angle, about scale height for the figures?

If you don't feel like messin' with it, that's ok... I just have a hard time on this teeny 15-inch monitor.. Have to use the slider too much...

understand hans...i appreciate the insight. will see what i can do for you. i do however, agree with you that maybe i could've taken some better shots. still getting to know my camera. not that that's an excuse. as for the snipers...not sure what to say...lol. i will take your advice and see what i can do there as well...i may keep them...if the scene fits...however i may take them out based on a previous posting. my biggest problem is making time to build this damn thing! Hmm... maybe that's my problem camo, I'm a Criminal Justice major, those snipers looked fine to me. (Really I just thought the 50 cal. was sweet! haha)

After DP and model, now Hans, I'd have to say go with the “surprise” factor of insurgents in the balcony too, lose the snipers, maybe some soldiers stacking up ready to clear out the building?

i agree about the .50 cal buddy. love it! if i dont use it here i will use it no doubt!! i have an alternate in mind and so far its looking more like that might be the one. hmmm...once i paint these figs and get them how i want them...there's no turning back for me. Laugh [(-D]

Camo,

You've got a ton of ideas being thrown at you, but I'm confident in the fact that you know what it is that you want to do with it. We're all just living through you ....

With that said .... now its my turn again! HAHA! I think that if you went with the insurgents on the balcony keep them hidden from the US Troops ... I think that if you went with them pointing weapons downward that you'd be changing your whole dio into more of a kenetic fight, rather than keeping your viewer in suspense. Does that make sense? I'd keep things calm and cool street-side, like having the guys talking to and couple of Arabs, looking at ID cards or something. The bad guys on the balcony would be the suspense factor.

I think that Hans has a good point here. You've got a GREAT dio going, but only you know if what the clear idea is. That point must be easily transfered to the viewer. Just make sure that it's clear. All these ideas being thrown around can either help OR derail your thoughts. Bottom line, just make sure YOU know what you want to do first.

Lookin good though ... and as far as getting time to build ... MAKE TIME!!!!

Laugh [(-D] hey...that pool came with the house...i never spent a dime on it other than getting ready every year/maintenance!! let me tell you something brother...its no picnic! an above ground olympic size swimming pool requires more work than i want to put into it. it can be a real pain. constantly having to skim the leaves and crap off the top. constantly vacuuming the crap off the bottom...constantly spending $$$ on chemicals...constantly cleaning the crap off the deck around it. yeah... to you its just all fun and swimming games...(lol)...but there isnt a day i dont spend at least 1 hr screwing with the damn thing. if it were up to me i'd bulldoze it all down, plant some grass seed and look at the pretty green color as it grows and gets cut by my lawn mower!!!! ok...people have been asking for "clearer pics" and here they are. as i said im still getting to "know" my camera so even a couple of these may not be the best. keep in mind please that this is a work in progress. i have many figures to still do and need to finish my humvee. the sign laying on the ground in there on purpose and will be "fixed" when im done. i took it down because i kept knocking it off as it was in the way...Laugh [(-D]. anyway, i'd appreciate any and all comments guys. thanks as always.

hope that helps everyone. as u can see the building itself isnt a "full" building. in fact it started out as just the ground level. then i said well i should have at least one balcony...then it became two then i said it doesnt look right without a roof so...the end result is what ya have. there are many things i would've liked to have done differently but where im at now there's no turning back...and i will incorporate those changes in the next one.

Woah!! This shot's my favorite. I was pretty sure that was a broken bottle in the street, but now I know it is- that's awesome! Did you take a 1/35 scale glass bottle and smash it over the edge of a 1/35 bar to defend yourself in a fight or something?? That's too cool.

Those "figure eye" level shots are real good. This dios looking even better than I remember from the far off shots Thumbs Up [tup] I got the instructions for you, I'll scan them in. Unfortunately it was the 50 cal they included, I had to make up the Mk 19 instructions as I went, but I think it came out pretty close. I’ll take a few close ups of mine and try and tell you what I did.

thanks p.o. i would appreciate that. it is kind of a cool shot...at least its clear. yeah, the bottle was a verlinden resin bottle i cut in half then used my exacto to creat the sharp edges then used various pieces, painted the same color then coated with about 5 layers of future to give it that glass look! i knew they had all kinds of $%^#$%^ laying around in their streets so i figured this would work. also though about maybe taking some p.e. and bending it to look like scrap metal in the road as well! we'll see!

PM sent, hope it works out for you. Nice work with the resin, it really does look like glass lol

Scrap metal sounds cool to me! Also if you can get your hands on any of that corrugated Evergreen plastic card (or pizza box cardboard or something), I've seen a lot of shots of just corrugated metal scrap all over the place as well.

so guys i was wondering...do i leave the humvee doors open or closed? i would think that if you came under fire and ran to the other side you wouldnt care/think to close the door...however, not ever been in that situation i cant say. i want to capture the whole "mayhem/confusion" thing and wonder if it would be more dramatic or not all things considered. let me know please!
