I'd rather have nightmares from this than from other things in my past...

COOOOOOLLLL, Karl! I remember that movie, I think...  didn't the Scarecrow turn out to be like a good guy? They used to show that movie around Halloween for several years...

Yeah, I get that a lot!  Actually, it's 'Bones' that I have seen too much of... the real thing though, not just the show...  I'm like Haley Joel Osmond, 'I see dead people...'

Karl

Really nice little scene you put together.  I like it a lot.

Just a couple of comments on the 'accuracy' of the scene (realizing you might not be as interested in accuracy in order to get the impact you want):

-I agree with Manny's assessment about the bones and their stark white color.  Not to get all technical on ya here, but typically bones will only get that white if they are exposed to the sun for quite some time - in a grave such as yours, you'd expect them to be more grey or to have been stained by the surronding dirt and be similar in color to that.  Of course, since you are going for effect rather than 'decompositional accuracy', it makes sense for them to be more stark.

-Another thing you might consider - and again, I'm not sure you'll want to go this route, based on the effect you are looking for, but just in case: judging by the condition of the uniform, it is actually pretty unlikely that a body in a grave would be as completely decomposed as that.  One thing you might expect to see would be soft tissue clinging to the bones.  So if you were interested in increasing the level of gore a little, you could put little flecks of tissue paper or something else, soak it in white glue, paint it a nondescript brownish color and attach it to the ribs, back of the hands, on the skull, maybe a patch on the side of the face...

-One final thing - if the body were that decomposed, at the very least you'd expect the uniform to be pretty heavily discolored: both from being in the ground and from absorbing the gases and fluids that escape during decomp.  It would also absorb a lot of water from the ground...

Those comments are all based on how 'precise' you want your scene to be.  I know your goal may not be that level of precision, and I think it tells a pretty spooky and powerful 'story' just as it is, so take my observations with the grain of salt they are worth Tongue [:P]...

Karl nice little vignette there, it difinatly has an eerie factor of about 9.8. Man that scarecrow is one creepy looking dude!

I remember watching ‘Dark Night Of The Scarecrow’ when it first aired as a movie of the week (remember those) back in the early eighties.

I think this is strange, but when I saw the title as the most recent thread in the section, I hoped it was something you did, and I wasn't disappointed, Karl, this is very cool.  I like everythign about it, and the imposing sky in the background really made for some excellent atmosphere, hmm, I guess I cannot avoid pun.

ALex and Tom, thanks sincerely for the comments! I'm glad to hear that you think it turned out convincingly! Big Smile [:D]

Manny, you bring up a great points, and I agree about "dirtying up" the bones a bit; it's just a matter of "how much" without losing the shock effect of the skeleton.

The head is lighter colored, because ....well...it's not really supposd to be a pumpkin, per se, although I did paint the other ones like that just to see if they looked like pumpkins--but then I thought, "well, a pumpkin rots pretty quickly; the scarecrow probably wouldn't have had a head for long if it were a pumpkin?"  I guess that's part of the enigma of the scene? What IS the scarecrow made of exactly? Is it--or WAS it--"alive: at some point? (cue "spooky music" here!)

That movie was the one where the scarecrow --"Bubba"--comes alive at night and wreaks havoc! I'm still waiting for them to release it on DVD! What a great flick, huh?

Wow, doog---what a cool vignette...very nicely done...your figgie skills improve every time you paint one...

A few points/questions...is the head of the scarecrow supposed to be a pumpkin? If so, why is it white? Those other two heads look cool as well; would be a hard choice to make of the three; the skeletal remains look a little "stark and white..maybe a nice wash to settle inbetween the bones??? I realize the flash is washing some of that out but they are still a little clean, IMO; also, that movie---was that the one where the scarecrow comes alive and seeks revenge during the night??? Those corn-stalks are the bomb !!!

"In the Shadow of the Scarecrow"
Posted by the doog on Sunday, June 7, 2009 4:15 PM

Hi guys--

Well, I have wanted to do this little project for a whle now, but it never seemed like the right time, until I finished a build 9 days ago, and couldn't start another big project before I'll be leaving for a 2 month tour on Wednesday the 10th. I had about 2 weeks to blow on something, so I figured I could wrap this up relatively quickly. It's a scene inspired somewhat by an old, favorite movie of mine called "The Dark Night of the Scarecrow" from the 80's.

I used these elements--Verlinden's "Soldier's Skeletons"; MK's "Farmer"; MK's "Scarecrow"; and Military Miniatures Warehouse "Corn Stalks". I also had some spare heads in case I wanted to use them.

As you can see, the scarecrow didn't have a head, s I had to sculpt one form Milliputt two-part putty. I did a few versions before settling on this one.

Here's the general layout--I wanted to make this a little more "scary" or gruesome", but decided in the end to make it more of an enigmatic scene, with the farmer pondering the scarecrow's newly acquired "prop"...

The white metal corn is ripening...

The base was constructed using the ol' garden foam.

This was then covered in first a light celluclay to simulate old, dry dirt, and then a darker celluclay (tinted with paint) to simulate the newly extracted dirt...

The dead soldier....

..was placed in his final resting place, sealed in with real, sifted dirt.

Pierre and the scarecrow were painted up using craft store acrylics...

...and the scene is 99% finished. The scarecrow was placed on an post made of cocktail sticks. The old corn stalks are from a straw broom. The vegetative matter in the rows is a spice called "Cilantro Leaves"--I just have to clean up the sides, base, and maybe a few small details here and there....

The farmer is pondering how the scarecrow managed to snare the old Mauser from the grave...

I took advantage of some atmospheric skies and some creative editing to make some pretty cool images....

I hope you enjoyed this little diversion for me. I will be here until late Tuesday night, so all comments and questions or even suggestions are welcomed and appreciated!
