1/144 GM Vs Z'Gok :Izubuchi Version
Posted by dj898 on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 12:06 AM

This is the one of classic battle scene from the original MS Gundam TV anime.
Mid way through the series the battle took place at the Earth Federation Forces Jaburo HQ and their latest mobile suits, RGM-78 GM were rolled out to combat the threat of Zeon special force led by the legendary Red Comet. One of GM then foolishly attacked the Red Comet and promptly got its cockpit area smashed.

I made the similar themed diorama few years back though take a bit of artistic license I reversed the roll. This time around though I sticked with the original setting although couldn't help myself to tinker with minor details. Any Gundam fans will notice right away what have been changed - namely I changed the two main mecha from the original version to Izubuchi designed versions [GM Cold Climate Type & Z-Gok-E] and moved the setting from the underground cave to the snow field at near the EFF base far north.

Build wise, to save the time I re-use/salvage from my other projects where possible. That Z'Gok-E is one of straight snap built kit with new coat of painting. And GM Cold Climate Type which was the junk with couple of joints damaged/broken re-used with necessary repair. Since both kits had their joints glued shut it was easy task to tackle.

The most challenging part was the snow effect. I've heard of snow effect part from railway supply company but couldn't source in time nor willing to shell out the money for this one-off project. After reading/researching I've settled on the method using bi-carbonate of soda, PVA, and bit of wate. For mecha themselves I resorted to the method where firstly applying patches of water/PVA and gently blow the bi-carb soda before shaking off the excess. However this didn't give the result what I was hoping for so I ended up spraying patches where the concentrated snow would accumulated. However this resulted unnatural look though for the first time try I'm content with the result. Maybe next time... [yer~ right~ ^ ^]

Right, enough of rambling from me. Hope you enjoy the result and yes it's hard work to get the right look especially with 1/144 scale kits. Yep, I'm aware that those vegetation indeed look out of scale...  In any case it's too late to do anything with it since it's now given to missus' close friend's hubby. Yes, it was commissioned work by missus... - -;

I must say that I am disapointed in the lack of paint on the kits themselves because other then that it looks really good.

^ ^

What can I say~! I worked for the deadline and needed ways to cut corners and GM did have the paint on although Z'Gok-E was what one called the simple finish method.

I'm actually happy with the posing as it turned out far better than what I had in mind. And the lack of painting, about 1m away you can hardly notice when it's inside the Acrylic case... heh
