Bomb cart tractor in 1/48th scale
Posted by Blackbelt2 on Saturday, September 26, 2009 8:57 PM
I am adding additional detail to my B-17 diorama. I built the B-17 in 1/48th scale and it came with a bomb cart but no tractor that would pull it. Does anyone know who would make a tractor in 1/48th scale? Also, I would like to add a staff car to the diorama and I know that there is a P-51 Mustang kit out there that comes with a staff car and figures. Does anyone know if there is a kit out there for just the staff car in 1/48th scale?

Blackbelt,

Yep, Revell-Monogram produced a set of WWII Ground Equipment that included a tug.  It was a Pro-Modeler kit that you might still be able to find online for a reasonable price (around $30--which is about how much it cost when it first came out).  I have that and have built the tug; VERY, VERY nice kit, well made, little-to-no flash and very detailed!

I think there are other tug kits out there as well...maybe even resin, if you're into resin kits.  If memory serves correctly, I think VP even had a 1/48 tractor, but I could be mistaken.  Tamiya has an injection molded one in their Corsair kit with Moto-Tug kit.

Tamiya has also produced the US Army Staff Car in 1/48 by itself (item #32559) for about $30-40, depending where you buy it.  I have it in my stash and it looks like an OUTSTANDING kit--can't wait to build it!!!

Senojrn,

Thanks for the info. I will check on line for the ground equipment kit.

I believe that one of the B-24 kits came with an M-2 Cletrac tractor at one time.  You can see a picture of one at the USAF Museum website.

...........Accurate Miniatures reissued the old Revell Pro-Model aircraft tractor along with a bomb cart and a selection of World War Two under wing ordnance. It's currently in their online catalog and in many hobby shops. I bought mine at Hobby Lobby last year, but it was a close out item...............The Tamiya moto tug is being re released in their 1/48 military miniatures series along with a set of Navy pilot and mechanic figures.

Most of the pics I have ever seen of B-17 or B-24 bases have a version of the Dodge 3/4 ton truck (I think it is a Dodge) towing the bomb carts.

The Cletrac was usually used to tow aircraft or unstick them from the mud. The littler tractors were seen more often at fighter bases or hauling utility items at bomber bases.
Course, in war, sometimes they made due with whatever was available.

Here you go, from Plus Models:

Phil,

that is an interesting photo of a B-17F as I believe it is the 303rd BG at Molesworth, England, which was my uncle's bomb group.  I can barely make out the triangle C marking on the tail of the far right F model.

Very cool, got any pics of his plane?

Ok, found out the vehicle is a M6 Chevy Bomb Service Truck.

While I can't find any kits of it in 48th (Matador Models used to do one in 1/72nd that came with a Cletrac but not in their catalog anymore) sounds like you can convert the new tamiya GMC Jimmy into an M6.
