"Long road home..."
Posted by Buddho on Saturday, January 2, 2010 8:20 AM

Here is a simple vignette with A German soldier heading home from war. It is a MIG resin figure painted with Vallejo acrylics. The groundwork is foam bonded to a wooden base. The grass is Silflor, the snow is white microballoons, and the trees are dried flora from Michael's.

Wow, everything looks great and I really like how he is placed at one end of the base. It really makes it feel like he has a "Long Road Home."

Thanks for sharing.

I really LIKE it! Yes Couldn't have asked for better timing to post your work when it is REAL cold outside here in Indiana.  It was 5 degree this morning.  Well done Buddho!

Nice job, a very simple Dio. but it tells a very big story. All the elements come together great. I really agree with the comment about placing the fig. at one edge of the base to help to bring home to story. Excellent job!!!!!!!

Thank you all for replying, I had a much more involved dio planned, but it got too busy and the main theme got lost in the whole buildup....so I went simple and had one main theme and was quite happy that it came out this way.

I must admit this isn't normally my thing, but i really like this. I do agree that having the fig up at one end is brilliant. It really gives a sense of the soldier having a long way to go. The ground work is excellent and i think you have really captured the look of the snow. Yes

Thank you Figurefreak and Bish for your replies. I was hoping for solitude, sorrow etc., so that is cool you brought that out. I dont do too many vignettes and dioramas due to all the planning and setups...I usually over do things and just looking at the work on this site lets me know I have alot to learn!

Thank you everyone!

Ben Franklins might be closer to Michaels then Hobby Lobby. Or you can look for a florist shop and see if they sell dried flowers.

This really has a great feel to it Buddho. Also the composition works very very well. When there are few components to place thay need to be in exactly the right place, and you've nailed it!

Very well done. I really get a sense of the long, exhaustive march ahead, the cold weather, the gloomy atmosphere. Well done.

Very very good vignette Buddho. Must have been difficult to restrain yourself from adding more into it, with all those other ideas for it swirling in your head.....but what you have there does the job for what it is. Idea well executed in every regard, my man.StarStarStarStarStar

I also wanted to mention the great job at putting the soldier at the beginning of the path; it definitely emphasizes the diorama's title and gets the point across. You should enter it at a contest.

I think it's simply brilliant, but this post made me think a bit. Does make sense though.

This vignette reminds me of the poor sap walking all alone at the end of World at War's "Stalingrad" episode. Perhaps that inspired you?

Very nice dio!!,  It's cold outside right now and I can just about feel the chill.  great job of conveying so much using so little.    How well do the microballoons cover? I've only heard of using them for gap filling. Looks like I learned my 1 thing for today. LOL

Well I guess I'll be the odd man out here. I'm sorry snow doesnt speak of end of the war. Considering how much he looks like he's carrying I doubt he's been discharged. It does remind me of the end of the movie "Battle of the Bulge" were all the germans are walking home out of fuel, so yes long way home, but to me but not as you say "heading home from the war" . In no way will I say its not well done because it is, Long road home may even be the right title, but the your afterthought is where it strike me as wrong.

My 2c

Andrew
