Cold in the Snow
Posted by Leddy on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 6:14 PM

I want do do a diorama of a column of refugees or civilians trudging down a snow covered road.  Can anyone give  advuce on how to make and paint blankets to drape over the people?   What type paper or cloth is best?   What type of paint should be used?  Is the paint mixed with the glue or put on later?  What size would represent a 1/35 blanket?  How should the blanket be shaped around the marching figure?  All suggestions are appreciated.

Are we talking a babies warming blanket or one from a king sized bed? The best thing for you to do is to take a blanket that you think is appropriately sized and have someone cover themselves as you are planning on displaying it in your model. Take a picture and use it as a reference.

Tissue and thinned white glue to make the blanket.

I covered lead foil--the top of a wine bottle--with some Squadron putty slathered on to thicken and soften their edges a bit to make these blankets bundled around my soldiers in this Filed Kitchen dio.The lead foil was easier to make folds in than tissue paper, and I thought just as goods, if not better looking in terms of scale thickness,

Hawkeye,

Taking the photo and modeling after a real person is a good idea.  The blanket would be a full size.

Do you put the blanket on first and then paint the blanket and the person  Or is the  person painted and then draped with the blanket with paint to follow?   Can acrylic paints be used with the glue mixture?

Thanks!

Doog,

Interesting  use of metal foil and Sq. putty!   How do you get the foil to adhere to the figure?    Is the figure painted after the blanket is placed?   Do youi have any suggestions for shaping the folds of the blankets?  Will acrylic paint work with this approach?

Thanks for  your input,

Leddy,

I used gap-filling superglue to stick the blanket to the figures. Use anything like a rounded toothpick or similar pointy implement to shape the foil.I added the putty AFTER the foil had been added to the soldier, to thicken and/or soften the folds and creases. I thinned the Squadron putty with Testor's glue and applied it with a cheap Testor's glue brush--the short kind with the white handles and black nylon bristle. I cut the bristles number to make the brush tip thinner; like only maybe ten bristles?

And I painted the whole thing after it was all glued together with acrylic paints. I used two coats-a dark, preliminary coat slopped on to cover, and then a deliberate painting over that paying attention to details,

Hope it works for you!
