Shuttle Booster rocket Exhaust
Posted by KarlK on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 12:53 PM

I am attempting to build a 1/144 scale Space shuttle lifting off the pad. I want to simulate the yellow white exhaust plume from the boosters. Any ideas on how many  and how large the LED's would have to be? I want the look to be as bright as possible but I am not sure how to get the best look. I have seen other builders do this with their static rocket diorama's but they don't explain how they did it.

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Bjorn Jacobsen is on MIG facebook frequently and posts fantastic explosions etc.  He has authored a few books.  I just discovered his work in the past couple months and it's the best I have seen.

Google "bjørn jacobsen models" images.

Steve,

How many, what color, and what size LED's did you use? This is what i am looking for. I am guessing that you use a white LED and colored the foil yellow & orange? This is the look that I am looking for.

Hi Karl,

I used 2 of these. I said I used 1, but looking back I used 2.

Unfortunatly I don't have pictures of the process but I used cotton and sprayed yellow, orange and black. I inserted the leds into the cotton and hooked them up to the batteries. I didn't use a circuit, just a switch mounted to the base. I did have to experement with the colors to get the right effect but being my first time, I was pleased with the results.
