Bounty Launch diorama
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, May 22, 2004 9:01 AM
Group,

I am working on a 1/24 scale diorama of the HMAV Bounty's launch, with figures of Bligh and the other 18 men who were set adrift with him. The launch is currently on a temporary base that portrays its final orientation on the planned sculpted ocean base - surfing down the forward edge of a long low swell, slightly heeled to port. I have finished 18 of the occupants of the launch, each of which portrays an activity described in Bligh's journal. The 19th, and last, occupant will be lying amidships between the rowers, resting on water casks and the carpenter's chest. Several pictures of the model appear on the Pitcairn Island Study Center site, and an earlier version of the model recently won second place in the 'ships' category and 'most artistic' overall in the online Naplak model contest. Photos of the model can be found at:

Comments and suggestions welcome, it's never to late to make changes!

That's an excellent build. I have a suggestion though. I'm no professional, I haven't even built a kit yet that's worthy of posting. Anyway, have you tried using some very fine fishing line for the gull support? It might make it a little less visible. Maybe 7-10 lb. test or something less maybe. I hope this helps. -CheersSmile [:)]

Riffraff,

I'm not happy with the gull (actually, it's supposed to be a booby) support, either, it was a temproary arrangement. A more permanent arrangement will be to have the bird closer to the end of the oar, and have a short, thin wire from the tip of the oar to the underside of a wing. It would clarify the attempt of the crew member to swat a bird with the oar, and show less of the support. Thanks for the thought.

Good deal! Your welcome. I figured you probably had somethng else in mind, with the workmanship involved thus far. What type of wire will you be using?

Riffraff,

I'm not sure. I have some scraps in my toolbox, I'll probably choose a fine silver wire, just stiff enough to hold up the bird, which would show a lot less than the black wire I'm using now.

Thanks, I'm very curious to see the finished build. If you do try some fishing twine, plesae inform me of the results. I'd also like to know what types of "invisible" supports others use, or have seen used, for dios, etc.. Personally, I haven't seen too many posts on this subject. If someone has, please point me in the right direction. -Cheers

Very nice. And just to think it's scratchbuilt.
