French buildings??
Posted by senojrn on Friday, June 25, 2004 2:30 AM
Hey everybody, I am tossing around the idea to build a dio inspired by a scene from "Band of Brothers". The setting is based around a French barn. I think it is in episode 2 "Day of Days" where the paratroopers are attempting to group together and they are in what appears to be a farmyard. The barn and buildings appear as if they are stone, or some sort of masonry.
I did a lengthy Yahoo / Google search for French barns, Normandy architecture, etc, etc....but to no avail. I looked in the Time Life series of WWII books, but can't find any pictures of a typical 1940's era French farm, barn, farmhouse, etc.
Does anybody have any references, pictures, sources, or the like that can help me out?? Basically, I'm looking for the style of the buildings, what do they look like? Are they low one-story buildings, or tall two-story buildings? What are they constructed of--lumber, heavy timber, stone, or stucco??? Are the roofs thatch, or wood / tar shingles????
Any information would be helpful!! Thanks!

Try custom dioramics as well, they carry a lot of WWII era dio buildings. If you want references, try googlging Normandy and history. Try the images search. Check out the travel agencies if they come up, or local history pages, they tend to have pics of older, "historical" buidlings on their sites.

I saw a dio using a french normandy farmhouse once. It was witha German panther I believe. It was masonry covered in stucco. the roof was thatch with wooden timbers and supports.

I just did a google search for French Farmhouses, french tithe barns, cottage and farm architecture in France, French equestrian property and pulled up way too many sites to count. 20 minutes of poking around and jackpot. All have pics of what you'd be looking for. It just takes some poking and looking down some "side avenues". Give it a shot.

The realestate sites are going to show alot of properties that are refurbished, but the architecture is still the same and many are refurbished to give the appearance of a quaint country cottage. Look at sites that are for Bed & Breakfasts, riding holidays, weekend properties in Normandy and Provence.

Also look at timberframing sites.

Allied & Axis magazine also has loads of photos of what your looking for.
