fur trade and rev war
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, June 23, 2003 10:02 AM
Thanks for reading this.
I am working on an educational diorama (1:6 scale) based on the fur trade in minnesota in the 1700's. I need figures with flowing hair - not g.i. joe stubble. I am scratch building many of the 'props' but would like suggestions for fur trade items. I located two birch bark canoes in scale, have created wigwam, fire circle etc. and am now working on the trade post itself.
Any direction would be appreciated. Pictures available - but it is in its mock up stage. thanks

I used to work for Fort Snelling in Minnesota as a tour guide there, and during the Fur Trader's days many people would come dressed as Fur Traders. Authenticity was required! Therefore, based on what I remember, (although this is more 1827 timeframe) any after market rucksacks and soldier's baggage from the Revolution to the Civil War would work in this case as things fur traders used to carry their goods.

Making the furs would be difficult, but you could use small cloth samples to simulate the 'tarps' that Fur traders used to wrap their furs in inclement weather.

I know it's not much, but I hope it helps somewhat.
