Deer hair for grass?

Hey, everybody!

Sorry to take so long to reply, haven't had much time lately....

Anyways, about squirrel hair, I'm sure it would work just fine, they are practically the same. Both are used for the same purpose in fly tying, and they have about the same texture. Well, the tail at least, that's all I use usally. There are probably all kinds of hair you could use, maybe you could even use people hair when you get ahaircut, but I'm not gonna try that, I'll stick with the deer and squirrel for now.
By the way-- did you know you can sell squirrel tails to Mepp's- around 36c for your normal fox squirrel, and they double in value if you ttrade them for lures.I think you could probably cut the tails off them if you run over them. There are dead squirrels out here all the time, but I haven't ever used roadkill animals, but i'm sure they'd work if you got 'em fresh enough....
   As for the ticks, the few that were left I'm sure froze pretty quick after I hung 'er up in the tree, but still I wouldn't want plain hide in the house, but salted and dried it's not too bad.

   And yes, marmite is pretty nasty plain, the way my grandparents use it is they make marmite butter- you just mix it in with some butter, I'm not sure how much you use, but it is pretty good (In my opinion) if it is not really strong. My grandma also mixes it in with her gravy for potatoes and it is not too bad.

I look at it this way. If you can find it and it works for you all the better. No one can accuse you of not using every inch of the animal. It is not for sport it's for art!

Hey don't worry to much about deer ticks if you treat the hide correctly.  I know for one that I would not want a freshly skinned hide in my house.  And, the ticks will leave the hide soon after harvesting the deer.  They are not scavengers, they prefer their meals "on the hoof".  I say this because of various articles I have read about deer processing.  Personaly I take my deer to the processor and have them done up.  I think that I am going to try some squirrel hair.  They are much easier to dress.

Hey I know this is a little late to get in on but it's not like we have anything else better to do.  I must say that vegemite is an aquired taste that I found I enjoy the secret is you DO NOT spread it on like peanut butter a little goes a long way.  And as far as deer hair goes, I HAVE ANOTHER REASON TO GO HUNTIN'.  Unfortunately the deer are not cooperating this year.  I have seen several but I was never able to get a shot (well not entirely true I should have remember the old saying a doe in your sights is better than the buck that ani't goin' show).  I wonder if squirrel hair would work (I see them ALL the time).  Let us know how the hair thing works.

Then Marmite must be some nasty stuff.  I had Vegemite once, when I worked with an Aussie guy many years ago, and to say that it an acquired taste would be the understatement of the year.

Now I know what the line from the Men at Work song, "Down Under", is referring to...

"He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich..."

            To preserve the fur I think if you just cut off a section of the hide and scraped off all the fat and salted it then it would dry in nice little squares. Then you could keep them in a ziplock bag until you are ready to use them. The tail, which is the main part they usually sell in stores, dries very nicely too. Most of it will not be used though, I gave my dog most of it to chew on, but a little will last for quite a while I'm sure at least until next year.

By the way...does anybody else here hunt/fish much?

Thanks for the offer. Currently I am swamped with work. My modeling is taking a back seat to my case log. As well I have enough Woodland Scenic grasses in the bench drawer for the project I have in mind.

By "Harvest" I meant how you would retrieve it all. I have enough trouble keeping German Sheperd fur and Cat fur from collecting in my work area. How you would collect all the hair from a deer and process it without tracking it with you everywhere is really what I meant.

Thanks for the price checkk. I see you both are familiar with the stuff.

gburdon-- If by "the harvest" you mean of the animal, that's taken care of already, if you mean how to protect or preserve it, it just dries if you cut it off (you can preserve the hide too with salt) and some places you can get it prestained for fly tying and it looks kind of like grass but I think if you paint it it would probably look better. I could probably send you some if you would like to try it. It's probably not a whole lot different than some of the hairs they use in paint brushes, though I'm not sure.
