Need confirmation on a diorama idea
Posted by Howitzer on Saturday, February 25, 2006 9:33 AM

Dio heads out there,

Need help with a diorama idea.  Just bought the 1/35 Dragon Bergepazer Tiger (P) (nice kit I might add) with an Academy early tiger 1.  I want to biuld a dio depicting this Bergepanzer hoisting the engine out of this damaged  Tiger 1.

Question 1) Since only three of this recovery vechicles were produced.  Is it a possible sernario?

 Question 2) Would the hoist be rated (and used) to pull a Tiger engine in the field?  How about a tiger 1 turret?

Question 3) What areas in Europe would have this occurred? Italy? Kurst? Both?

Question 4) If yes to the above is it possible the could have occurred in winter snow conditions? I beleive the battle of Kurst occurred in the spring/summer and I'm not to sure where it snows in Italy. (except Torino, 2006)

Any response will be helpful.

If this turns out OK I'll post some pics or you can see it personally at the 2007 IPMS Nationals.Question [?]Confused [%-)]

It sounds like really interesting diorama.  Good luck with your search for the info.  Unfortunately, I do not know much about this matter.

All three of the Bergepanzer Tiger (P), built in Sept. 1943, were assigned to Schwere Panzerjager Abteilung 653. This theoretically limits the types of vehicles which would be serviced by Bergepanzer Tiger (P) to those within sPzJgAbt 653, namely the Ferdinands of 653 and the Brummbars of Sturmpanzer Abt. 216, which was assigned to support the Ferdinands.

The only scenerio were you would find the Bergepanzer Tiger (P) in action in the snow would be during the actions at the Nikopol Bridgehead between Nov-Dec, 1943. I have a photo showing one in action in the snow, using another Ferdinand in the lead, towing a third Ferdy out of the mud.

The jib crane could lift a engine out without any problem. No way could it lift a Tiger turret.

Man, you guys really amaze me with ton of knowledge all of you have.  I wish I could be as detailed, but just don't know where to begin (thank god for this forum, where I can ask many questioins and get answers).
Kykeon, besides doing research on internet, is there any other source that you use for references?  I'm trying to raise my knowledge to the next level and try to be as accurate as possible.

Thanks

M1;

      The net is great for quick and dirty answers, but it is no match against a well equipped home library when it comes to specifics. When dealing with Elefants/Ferdinands, Jagdpanthers and Jagdtigers, there are only 2 books one needs, unfortunately, they are both $100 a pop. The Combat History of Schwere Panzerjager Abteilung 653 and it's companion volume; ".... " 654., are the definitive unit histories. With over 550 pages and 700+ photographs, these books are the last word on German heavy tank destroyers. The 653rd has just come out in paperback, at a fraction of the price, a mere $20 or so. But beware, if they are anything like the paperback volumes of Tigers in Combat, Volumes I and II, they are not the same book as the hardcover volumes. Smaller, lower resolution photos and poorer quality paper are the major differences, I have not compared them side by side to see if the text is the same.
