Before I go ape s**t.
To get the feel of building a proper diorama and practice the basics of working up deck details, how about a diorama of the picture on my posts of the guys hoisting the plane back onto the catapult? What would be a scale to work in that would be manageable, have the airplane be fun to work on, and make the guys be just challenging enough to make it a foray into figure modeling? I think it would be way cool if I could make two of the guys look like me and my Dad. You guys ever see the episode of "Amazing Stories" where the old guy dies and him and his son fly off to heaven in the B-25? Now who among you didn't cry like they'd just watched "Old Yeller" after that tear jerker?
