I've seen many boxed dios that were well lit. One option might be smoked glass for the top. Another would be a small flourescent bub above the view port.

Thank you, that is sound advice. I think a boxed diorama with a section of the crane makes sense because the crane will have to be mounted well to hold the airplane. Now the stupid question. My thinking on the boxed diorama is that it will appear dark. Does it make sense to you to do it as a night scene and add some sort of lighting that the crew might use?

Given the plane in question, you're limited to 1/72 or maybe 1/48. Personality in these scales is going to be tough, just not enough space to work with. The other thing is you'll have to scratchbuild the crane all the way back to the deck unless you do a boxed diorama where the crane can be just a sectio of crane and the base be out of sight of the viewer.

To get the feel of building a proper diorama and practice the basics of working up deck details, how about a diorama of the picture on my posts of the guys hoisting the plane back onto the catapult? What would be a scale to work in that would be manageable, have the airplane be fun to work on, and make the guys be just challenging enough to make it a foray into figure modeling? I think it would be way cool if I could make two of the guys look like me and my Dad. You guys ever see the episode of "Amazing Stories" where the old guy dies and him and his son fly off to heaven in the B-25? Now who among you didn't cry like they'd just watched "Old Yeller" after that tear jerker?
