Not sure what they are doing in Tikrit now.  We were relieved by 42nd ID in 05.  What a great feeling that was!!  I had my fun in Iraq for 13 months getting about 2K on the roads from An Najaf, Karbala, Al Hilla and north as far as Tuz to west as far as KMTB.  Someone elses turn now.

as far as I know they are. Most other areas are bumping up to 6 monthers though, still short for the army guys I know.

FOB Danger... you the guys basically guarding the mosque? I BSed with a couple guys that had come up to the Rusty Nail to get the uparmor kits.

Been there quite a few times.  30 min travel by highway or 7 min travel through the city to get to Speicher from Tikrit FOB Danger).  When I did convoys - 70 MPH was the recommended speed.  :P  Speicher is huge anyways.  Zoomies still doing 4 month tours?  Our G3 FACs did, and they got the better equipment than we did.  M4A4s etc.

Speicher right outside Tikrit... I am a zoomie that loads planes, so I never went off the FOB. Thank God cause we sent out the mangled tires and various IED trashed vehicles and occupants.

not fun

You just can't go wrong with real sifted dirt for ground cover; I use it all the time over a base of Celluclay(affix w/ a coat of white glue after Celluclay is dry). I'd check some good photo references, maybe in some Concord Books; I'm not sure you're gonna ned a lot of vegetation beyond rudimentary grasses and a Verlinden palm. Plaster would be a pretty accurate look for Iraqi buildings as far as I can tell. Good Luck!

Well assuming its 1/35, how big are the culverts fullsize? It'll probably be N scale. for groundcover I'd say to maybe sift some dirt then bake to sterylize and maybe try some clay or something. Groundwork is a lot easier than people make it out to be. Honestly you can just go and mix a bunch of pastes and powders almost. Experiment with different techniques. I've even use flour mixed with paint, dirt and water to a thick consistency for groundwork. It makes nice hardpacked looking dirt for roads and such.

Building an IRAQ dio
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 1:49 PM

i need some help on figuring out materials and building techs. this will be my first realistic looking dio. my idea so far is to have my AAVP7A1 pulled up and unloading its marines who are going to be assaulting a 2 story Iraqi style commercial building, total number of buildings will be two along with buildings right on the edge of the dio behind the main building creating a back ally. the street is a T intersection with an irrigation ditch that runs along the longest part of the road and then crosses under the road where it will look as if it has dried up.

so now that you all have some idea of what im going for here i have a few questions

first what should i use as ground cover

second what should i use for the buildings i was thinking about using plaster and casting my own wall sections or should i use poster board.

third for my irrigation ditch what RR scale would be closest for the concrete culverts that would be on either side of the irrigation ditch

what kinds of foliage should i use

and anything else that you think i missed please add.

thanks everyone.
