The Raiders
Posted by ajlafleche on Friday, March 23, 2007 8:19 PM

Here are photos of my completed 54mm vignette, The Raiders, based on Michael Roberts' The Pursuit and MB Models Woodland Indian. The bird is a Minnie Ball Miniatures Quail (available from Military Miniatures Warehouse) whose tail I modified with some foil to represent a ruffed grouse, common in the northeast woodlands.

For details on construction of the base, please see this articleat Historicus Forma.

The figures have minimal modifications. All have real feathers from the fly tying section of L.L. Bean. The first guy was designed to be hurdling the log on his left hand. That didn't fit my scene so I inserted a brass rod in his right foot and inserted the extension into the fallen log. His splayed hand no longer looked right so I took one form the spares and added a war club fashioned by flattening some excess white metal and carefully bending it. The blade was done the same way. The next guy, about to jump the stream is oob. The last guy is the MB models figure. The scene in Last of the Mohicans where Hawkeye is running with a musket in each hand always looked neat to me. So I opened the figures left hand and placed a Michael Robert Brown Bess in it. He also has a beaded hair decoration made of thread soaked in thin superglue and painted. A tuft of dyed deer hair was simulated by splaying the thread.

Great work as always ajlafleche. The terrain looks really good and so do the Indian facial expressions. Great Work.

ajlafleche-

What a spectacular piece of work!  The feather detail, and the modification to the ruffed grouse is just awesome. The detail in the woodland scene itself is just stunning....

Could you repost a shot or two of the whole scene, but larger?  I would love to be able to see the whole piece of work in a larger format image...

Stunning, Al. Sign - Ditto [#ditto] for the larger format request. My eyes are about 25 years older than the rest of me.

I would also like to request a SBS from you on your next figure painting.

Here you go, gents. Thanks for the kind words. This was a lot of fun, especially building up the ground work.

I'd say that there was something in the water in westside, but I lived there for 15 yrs., & when I see your beautiful work it makes my dio's look like I didn't drink enough of it !!! My Only Que. is are those indians a representative of one's from the northeast. And the terrain also, reminds me of Vermont. What scale are they,& what percent of paint is oil ?    Asolutely wonderfull ,  rudedog

Thanks, Keith.

My Only Que. is are those indians a representative of one's from the northeast.

Yes, the three feathers suggest Mohawk and converting the quail to a ruffed grouse does allow them to be placed in the New York/New England area.

What scale are they,& what percent of paint is oil ?

They are 54mm. There's an oil wash on the rocks, standing tree trunk and on the soil. The rest is essentially Vallejo, Andrea, Citadel and Model Master acrylics with Glosscoat on the rifle stocks, Dullcoat on the figures and MicroSdcale satin finish on the hair.

Thanks Al.Ironic,though.Here I'm tring so hard to learn & improve techniques, hearing & seeing & even being scolded for using acrlics instead of oils on my figures. It is confusing. But if you can achieve those results with acrylics, then I'll continue my use of them & the heck with those that disagree.    Thanks again,   keith
