Diorama "German Bunker"
Posted by Model Maniac on Sunday, April 22, 2007 7:50 AM

I have some excess parts which build into two turrets. I've been thinking of making a dio for some time, but it's just yesterday that I started building and painting. All in all I spent around $1 for plaster cement and grass dust. Not so satisfied with the result, but I've tried almost my best :

The ground worlk looks good and I really like the suppport for the StuG superstructure. The Pz I turret looks good, but it would make a weak emplacemnt but somewhat logically needed in this setting. The StuG superstructure on a raised surface like this make a pretty good target. It's use in this emplacement doesn't seem logical, however. The only apparent access is through the roof putting the crew in severe jeopardy if they have to abandon the post. The base would have had to be filled in and there is no traverse mechanism and the gun itself has virtually no traverse in the superstructure. Unless a lot of work would have been done, it could only fire down a narrow path and would only be useful in defending a pass. It would be vulnearble to infantry who could take out the Pz I with a burst from a .50 cal. and then apporach with explossives from three sides and take out the StuG.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

good creative ingenuity!

You should add a couple of russians standing and looking confused. That would be good humor.

I like sofasurfers suggustion but make them french farmers most of the emplacements like you modeled were on the atlantic wall and the magino line. also i've seen pix that show the turret being a panther turret or simply a concrete culvert capable of traversing.either way i think you've stumbled onto a great idea and an atractive dio. nice job.

we're modelers it's what we do

Model Maniac.

I like it. A different and unusual dio. I never knew that the Germans reused turrets in that fashion....you learn something new every day.

PS: Keep 'em coming, we want to see more of YOUR work.

Many thanks for your kind comments and suggestions! I don't have much experience using plaster cement and the 'hills' didn't work out as planned. I also found the steel ring (base of the big turret) later on while the hills were made already, otherwise the ring should have been buried leaving only the turret off the ground. But same as my Gepard, I built it just for fun. I'm glad some of you guys like it. I'll look for something to build more. Thanks again!

Whatever it is that you build, MM, I'm just glad to see you posting your own work. You're a better builder than you give yourself credit for.

Three days after the making, this dio transformed itself into a mess, out of moisture and sunlight. So I'll just throw away the base, keep only the turrets and steel ring supporter. I'll make another base and this time the steel ring will be fully buried. But will the next one follow suit? I wonder...

Model Maniac is that mould in that latest pic? That fuzzy lookin' orange stuff? Anyways I thought it looked good. If your redoing it maybe put the turret on a bunker, or raise it more and have some sort of access way for when the Germans abandon or abandoned the position. Maybe even show them running out of it? I dunno but it looks good. I got an obsession with bunkers and have a few completed and in the making and a few just ideas just stuck in my head.

That's right, it is mould and the orange color suggests that it may be toxic one. You've given me some ideas about how to redo the dio. I can use styrofoam as bunker and make an entrance into it. I'll add some figures too. Thanks for your suggestion. Can you show your finished bunkers?

Here're some German bunkers for your pleasure, all built by "Art Instructor" - my main modeler :

This weekend I rebuilt the dio using styrofoam as bunker structure and coated it with plaster cement then painted with acrylic color. I made entrance into the bunker and added some figures to give some life to the dio. I also painted the inside and added some accessories in there. Here is it :
