"Road to Rome" -finished dio-
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, July 17, 2007 11:17 PM

...A dio I finished many moons ago...won a 2nd place in Atlanta IPMS Regionals a while back...StuG is not up to my standards today, but I think the base and figs hold up pretty well...park bench, tables, chairs are old VLS etch kits...most of the base and building are Dutton products...inside tile is individually laid...

I like this one.

Comment #1: In the photo, the water in the barrel looks like it has a slight miniscus - is there one, and did you use a liquid water material?

Comment #2: A woman in a bath! lol

Really nice work on this one yet again, Manny.

Love the girl in the bath! Have to say that she looks quite unconcerned with a gaggle of randy grenadiers outside! Brave Bellisima!

Your dio's are really nicely composed--I can see the influence of Francois Verlinden (Bow [bow]all bow!) in them, in the attention to detail. Very nicely done!

If I could suggest one thing--in a dio ike this with a lot of destruction, I would lay a final coat of very fine rubble/dust down once all the figures are positioned and set. The sidewalks and flloors look a little too clean for realism where they were cleared; a slight layer of fine rubble would bring all the rubble into a more homogenous rendering. Just my humble opinion...Whistling [:-^]

Nothing taken away from it though; a fine composition!

...thanks for the kind words and input...

...one interesting sidenote, I construct ALL of my dios so that they are solid...what I mean is this: you can turn it upside down and NOTHING will fall off...that always seems to amaze people when I do this at shows, etc...something to keep in mind when viewing even the finest speck of rubble, etc...I feel as though a dio should be solid and not a "sandbox"...

I llike the stuff outside the building, especially the para's camo smock. Ver nicely done.

I'm not buying the inside, however. The buiding has been mostly demolished but everything fell outside the walls. Further, the bathing woman just doesn't ring true. As a regular civilian, she's way too relaxed and nonchalant about her nudity while having an armed column passing by. As a "working girl," she'd also be too relaxed, more likely she'd be posing to encourage a business transaction with the passsing potential customers.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Yup, I agree...I do all of mine in the same way--I set the fine rubble/dust by laying it down over a quick coat of dull lacquer.

I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING; What?!?! You mean other guys DON'T fix their rubble and stuff? That's like going jogging without underwear!Laugh [(-D]

...you are taking it way too seriously...having her inside like that was more of a gag than anything else...as displayed normally, you have to be at just the right angle to see her inside, and it was a hoot to hear people mention her at the model show if thet did happen to see her...like I said, the inside of the building was done as pure fun, not for realism...

...having said that, it was not uncommon for civiliams to clear up rubble from inside of bombed-out bldgs and "move" back into them when they could...

I'm not sure I understand your first question but I'll give it a shot: the water level in the barrel was painted various brown shades and they filled with a thin layer of clear acrylic (yhe water level was already molded to height)...there are some white specks on the water that actually are reflections from my lighting, anything else in there is dust that doesn't belong...lol

Yeah, well you tend to get dirty in war, gotta bathe...LOL
