...Eastern front, Feb '43 dio...
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 21, 2007 10:22 AM

...this was my first attempt at a white camo scheme...I was NOT trying to reproduce whitewash applied in the field, but rather a factory applied scheme of white, which was done on a limited scale for tanks produced and destined for the Eastern front during the winter months, so the tank has a very even and regular layer of white with minimal wear...having said that, I was not happy with the results but had a base, some figs and a bldg that I cobbled together for a quick dio...the Mk III J is the old DML Imperial kit and is a great reproduction of that tank...I robbed their StuG F8 for the ostketten, which I think are cool looking...figs are a mix of Warriors, VLS and DML, ruin is VLS and snow is an AM product that I can't recall the name of but use al the time to make snow...

...scene depicts the opening stages of the battle of Kharkov, with this unit belonging to the GD division...they are advancing and have just come under small arms fire...squad leader is trying to locate source of fire, while platoon commander coordinates response with his MG section and tank support...

...never have entered it in any contests and only a couple of friends have seen it so I am interested in all comments...

Nice enough job, Manny, but I have to say that I feel strongly that your "white" is too pristine and unnatural. An overall light wash of raw umber oils would really tone down the glaring white and immerse the vehicle more into the scene.

Consider that a tank would have people crawling into it; it would have dirt and mud over the top--scuffs, etc. There are grey scuffs on the engine deck, but what/who made them? Since you've depicted the bottom with realistic weathering, you should have harmonized the top hull with the bottom. Perhaps this disparity in tone is what displeases you?

Here's my PzIV with an oil wash over the white...notice how it tones it down to a more realistic shade...

You could probably still weather it thus?

...true enough, its that 95% syndrome thing again...I wasn't happy with much of this entire dio, and relegated it to the "B" team shelf...in fact, I tried prying the tank from the base to adapt it to the other Mk III I have in the armor forum (yellow II01) but it would not budge !!!  ...might just go back and give it that overall raw umber wash yet...thanks for the feedback...

...raw umber oil: a modeler's best friend...LOL...

...by the way, nice Mk IV...

...I did it the hard way: I painted the base color panzer grey then white...then took a steel-wool pad and "sanded" the white off on selected areas...if you look closely I sanded down too deep in some areas...you can get the same effect by dry-brushing the edges with panzer grey...
