Empty parking spot in Amsterdam
Posted by vespa boy on Friday, November 2, 2007 5:01 PM

This is a model of an empty parking spot on the Singel canal in Amsterdam I finished over a year ago.

The base was made from wooden to build up the contours

The top was planked and the composition established

I made a mould to cast the thousand of bricks I would need

Then I went ahead and paved the street

AFter painting and weathering

Eveything was scratchbuilt for this model. The garbage cans are mode up of 50 pieces, the bollard was turned on a lathe and details added, the water was cast in polyester resin and tinted with pigments and epoxied onto the base. It is 1/2"=1' or 1/24 scale.

...your works are really amazing which makes me want to know more about you as this is such a "niche" subject in model-making:

...what do you do as a profession, are you an architect? What prompts you to travel so much in Europe? What do you do with your finished pieces? Are you into any other form of modeling?

Fan-frik'n-tastic! 1/24 scale, perfect for displaying all types of automobile models, superb work.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] Ya your work and weathering are GREAT! It's something that aside from a fleeting moment of interest wouldn't be thought of again. Yet you make it absolutely interesting. I could see doing a section of a cathedral or some such but the roads and curbs? It's brilliant. And your methods garner my interest as much as your work. GIVE US MORE!

Honestly?

Weird, weird, weird--but FANTASTICALLY, WONDERFULLY, WEIRD!!!!! Big Smile [:D]

Seriuously, I agree with everybody who has said that this is really spectacular work! It's just that, if I hadn't seen it myself, I never would have believed that someone could love to build empty streets with such true dedication to realism and detail! Confused [%-)]Laugh [(-D]

I don't understand it....but I love it!!! Big Smile [:D]

Wow! Those pictures look so real! And you paved the street yourself?! Fantastic detail. That really is an amazing talent you have there. I showed my dad one of the pictures of the bricks, and he instantly thought it was a real picture. Do you have any other streets you have made? I would realli like to see pictures of them.

You know, the sad thing is, that if these were entered in a contest they'd probably just get passed right over. Nobody would really "get" what you're trying to portray. And the ability to blow up the picture so big on the computer screen really helps you to see the incredible detail...I wonder if that would tranxlate in "real life scale"?

Just an observation, not a criticism! Wink [;)]

MG42, I have posted a few other dios recently.

Doog: I think you are right about entering them into a dio competition. Without a military theme, a vehicle and a narrative they don't stand a chance, and I haven't even tried as I don't think there is enough P to enter them into IPMS shows. But these are the conventions of scale dioramas, and I don't need to change that. I am glad that on-lines forums exist.

I think like every other scale model, if this was scaled up to 1:1 it would look pretty weird. What I think it does, is convey the right feeling about the space I was modelling, which is what I wanted.

Just out of interest it took a year to make this one, and a lot of that time was making bricks and paving, but there is no real shortcut to doing this kind of work.

Vespa Boy,

Your work is just amazing!  You should write "How To" article to help someone like me.

Have you ever given any thought to actually producing a resin kit? I, for one, would eagerly purchase a copy of this masterpiece.

When I was following the build for this I have to admit I thought it was a little strange because there was no car or people in the diorama. I guess it took a while to sink in. I never thought it was weird, just really different.
When I look at Narayan's finished dioramas they convey a feeling of life with what first appears to be lifelessness. What isn't there makes me think of what was or could be there or what is around it.
Quite a study in detail and amazing work.

I've posted a few things here. I've been busy with a lot of other stuff lately. I haven't had much time at the workbench for the past couple weeks.
