Volkssturm - Berlin 1945 WIP
Posted by yeti0010 on Thursday, November 8, 2007 8:48 PM

I picked up Dragons old Volkssturm figures, I liked the old man with the glasses. in order to be accuret I needed to do a city scene but I did not think that my skills were up to it.  This is ,y first serious Dio and my first urban. It is my second shot at figures. Finally after reading a great artical on Armorama I felt that I was ready.  I built a few molds out of legos and filled them with plaster.  Here is the basic set up.

I am not sure how exactly I want to set up the figures, feedback would be great.

Wow, Dragon gave those guys BIG hands!

Your figures need more shading and highlighting, especially around the eyes which need to be narrowed. I'm guessing you're using a commercial flesh color right form the bottle. Those never look like human flesh. Experiment by adding some brown to the base color until you get a match to the back of your hand. Add more brown/burnt sienna for the shadows.

I use vallejo ocolors almost exclussively. My base caucasian flesh is their beige red. Dark skintone is added for the shadows and light flesh, sunny skintone and/or dark flesh are added for highlights as appropriate. Final highlights are done with light flesh.

The figure placement here is kind of awkward. None of them are looking toeards the viewer. That's important to bring the viewer into the scene. It's also important since the figures are the focus of the scene.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Sorry, a little OT, but do you think you can link the Armorama article you referred to? I always have problems using LEGO blocks for moulds, as the plaster always leaks.

I got some more time to work, I added the cobble stones with a screwdriver and a ruler, I plastered the inside of the main wall peice and I crashed brick to add as rubble.

I really appreciate those who builds from scratch. Great job so far. My only suggestion is that next time you make a pattern for cobblestone or brick pavement, do it in an alternating fashion. I believe it will look more realistic.

Keep us updated.
