Hitlerjugend in Normandy (contains zero nudity) *pics*
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, November 12, 2007 1:55 PM

I have posted a shot or two before of this little dio in other threads but have never presented it in much detail as a whole piece, so here it is...it represents elements of the 12SS PD "Hitlerjugend" preparing for a counterattack early in the battle of Normandy...a haltrack from the Pioneer company has just come back from the front and an officer in the halftrack is briefing the officer and senior NCO from a section of panzergrenadiers as to the enemy's disposition...the driver/radio operator looks on as the young panzergrenadiers anticipate their first contact with the enemy...

...DML halftrack, Custom Dioramic base, DML, Wolf and Warrior figs (I tried to represent as many types of camo as possible in thie dio that were used by the SS in Normandy):

I must say Manny, you really like the clean look on your builds, which BTW in my opinion is much harder to pull of than a dusty scratched up vehicle.  It's easy to hide flaws when you splash on some dirt, but your kits are always clean and flawless.

Here's an idea, you can place your two dios together and have the soliders pointing to the naked girl taking a bath in the middle of a cow pasture....that's a joke BTW Wink [;)]

You might want to read the old Shep Paine Book or other guide to painting eyes.  The uniform painting is pretty good, but the figures are really let down by the eyes.  Waaay too much whites showing.

Back in the 1970-1980's, Sheperd Paine was the master of the Diorama & Figure painters.  He was elected the first Grand Master of the Miniature Figure Collectors of America.  His work was the inspiration for many of us old timers & still holds up very well today.  His book " How to Build Dioramas & Figure Models" was re-issued/updated in 2000 & is available from Kalmbach in soft cover.  It's arguably still the best reference work on the subject available today.  I believe Shep is still on the Advisory Board of FSM.

A great diorama! What sort of paints did you use for the uniforms? The way you've painted them makes them standout nicely. A small criticism, although I can't talk for small details in my dios, is that the road looks a bit too clean, like it could do with some sort of dirt or debris Shy [8)].

...thanks, the uniforms are primarily Humbrol enamels; the flesh, oils...I agree w/ the debris; need to add some...

I right-clicked to view properties, copied the URL, put it into my browser, then viewed the image. Returning to this forum showed the image.

You're starting to get on my nerves Erich. Lovely work once again and i can only admire and aspire.

I still think you got too much credit for the campaign in France though. Regardless of who had the idea it was my execution that made it all possible.

Manny, you may not see it in this post, but I have to ask, why do I get these little icons in place of the photos you've posted which is basically like a little box that says "Bandwidth exceeded, upgrade to 'Pro' today"?

Basically it means I can't see your pictures anymore! Sigh [sigh]Boohoo [BH] Does anyone else get this icon instead of the photos?

*EDIT* I see that other people are having the same problem--you better fix it on your end there Manny!

One reason there's a bandwidth problem: STOP including pics when you're quoting someone. It's not rude or unethical to do so. If you want to talk about a particular pic, just post that one alone and comment.

Think of the dial-up users too when you post the pics in a quote.

His bandwidth is exceeded more frequently when you quote with pics.

Hmmm so that means that too many photos in Manny's post?

Manny, try to delete out some and see if that helps us! I still can't see 'em!

No, it means people quoting with pics are causing the bandwidth problems. Quote him if you must, but remove the code that references the pictures.

Yeah, but I already couldn't see the photos when I quoted him! The reason I DID quote him was to see if the pics would come up the same as the icons--which they did. SO that still doesn't explain what the problem is in the FIRST place!

It was already too late, he exceeded his band width.  He needs to clear some photos or pay for the extra band width.  Aardvark1917 gave some great agvice.  Not only will this help with the Photobucket dillema, it will also help those that are on dial-up.

Nice dio Manstein. Fortuneately i got to see the pics before they disappeared. The others are right about the eyes. Too much white. But there is one of the pics, where it shows the soldier near the building, closest to the halftrack, the one with the MG42. The angle you have taken the pic at makes the eyes almost glow. I think your vehicles are a little 'clean' too.

But hey, i love your work, it is way better than mine and is some of the work on this site that i look at and learn from.

Hurrah! There we go now!...

Hey Manny--that's a beautiful piece of work! Nice and compact like I like 'em! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Well painted--the camo looks great, as usual. I do concur about the eyes--however I don't feel that the use of white per se is the problem. I think that a little narrower a band of white would solve the problem. I use whte in my eyes as well, but I've found that the "bug-eyed" look is best avoided by painting as thin a line as possible into the eye space.

Beyond that though, this is another masterful work!

Thanks, Ron--I am definately a small dio kinda guy...gives me more room for more of 'em---hee hee hee...thanks for looking...I love those small bases; that particular one is a Custom Dioramic base which consists of three resin pieces...

Thanks, doog...agree on the eyes on the figs to the R of the track...musta forgot to add the pupils...lol...I sometimes go with just dark skits (ala fig w/ googles in Panzer IV dio) and sometimes try to replicate some of the white...results seem to vary...agree that the eyes on the grenadiers to the R of the dio need toned down...or I could just call it "Hitlerjugend Zombies"...lol...
