Box diorama's
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, October 18, 2003 2:32 PM
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if any of you have much experiance with box dioramas? I have been wanting to do a scene of a sunken aircraft (probably a B-17). In my mind, I see something along the lines of the aircraft sitting in silt at the bottom of the ocean, being investigated by divers or ROV's. Im figureing the only way I could pull this off is with a box diorama because it would have to be dark and I would have to figure out a way to filter the lighting to make it look hazy. (maybe black lights or something).
Anyway, I have NO experiance with box dioramas and was wondering if anyone knows of any publications, books or videos I might try to find to help me from the ground up. Any personal veiws or experiances and advice (like if this is something that could actually be done) would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks Smile [:)]

Shep Paine's book on making dios (by Kalmbach Publishing and can be ordered from this website) has a nice section on box dioramas. He goes into lighting and wiring of subjects as well as display ideas.

Maybe a piece of glass in the front with some clear sprayed on it will "fuzz" the glass enough to give the perception of murky water. (experiment). On the other hand, some of the real deep wrecks I've seen photos of, the water looks realtively clear. The surface teathers of ROV's would make a nice way to suspend the vehicles at differnt levels.

I did see a diorama of a zeroe on the bottom of the ocean and it looked pretty good. Even had a shark swimming close by. Water on a reef is pretty clear and since it is a diorama I'm sure spectators are pretty forgiving.

Good luck, and hopefully we'll see some pics when you're finished.

I have sheps second edition, it will help you with box dios, it is pretty extensive for pretty much any part of modeling, I've been building for years and I still use it.

Hi, I myself have no experience with box dios but if you have the 2003 Great Scale Modeling issue, you will find in the IPMS/USA Nationals Gallery some pictures of the subject that you have in mind.Cool [8D]
