Italeri's "Midieval Tournament"
Posted by the doog on Monday, December 24, 2007 9:56 AM

Hi guys, -- I built this as a gift for my girl, Jenn--anything to do with horses gets her beamin', and there's also a relevance to it regarding "us"--we go to a Rennaisance Fair every year in New York, and we always go see the "Jousting Tournament", which we both love.

This is a 1/72 new offering from Italeri, but by no means is it complete; you actually get two more mounted Knights, handlers, a squire, and a few other figures, but I couldn't fit them all in. The sheep are Preisser figures. The base is a "Football Display Case" that I got at A.C. Moore craft stores. The photo is from a "castles" calendar. Painting was done mostly with acrylic craft paints. The fence is fashioned from toothpicks.

Those of you knowledgeable with Japanese dirt bike manufacturers will notice the four heralds of the major manufacturers--Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha. I did this deliberately, as we both own Dual Sport on/off-road bikes, and she'lll get a kick out of this hypothetical "fossil" of motorcycle competition--yeah, I know it's a stretch, but she'll get the gist! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

...and in the case with the background...

Any comments or questions are welcomed! Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

Hey Doog

Another masterpiece you have done.  I like the incorporation of the m/c emblems.  Gives it a nice old flavour with a modern touch.  Horses were and still are a great source for off road galloping, and the new dirtbike with ponies under the seat, from one horsepower under seat to how many now to cover the off road area.  I like it.  Thumbs Up [tup]Approve [^].  Sure appears you and your other half sure enjoy life.  Its great to find a soulmate that shares the same interests.  Congratulations on both.

You my friend are talented, innovative and very imaginative.  Talking about thinking out side of the box.  (Oh by the way, I added a little comment in the Forum Suggestion Section to your last post.)

Nice stuff, Doog.

At first glance, I thought you were trying to make the heralds look like the KISS logo for the band.  Then I recognized the Honda wings, followed by Kaw's K, the Suzuki S and the Yamaha tuning forks. You made me laugh out loud with that.

Looks cool Doog! At first I thought it was going to be those Games Workshop jousting knights. Wow this is 1/72 scale? Looks larger. So whos going to win, Kawasaki or Honda?

Cool stuff, and great figure painting for 1/72.  The trees/grass look a little plain though, just one monotonous shade of dark green.  Also, it looked like there was a sprinkling of snow--wouldn't atleast some of the grass be dead, and the tree missing some leaves?  Other than that, I love it.

On a side note--my mom's he same way about horses.  Her and her "Fellow Equestrian Enthusiasts" (horse cronies) rode around my neighborhood singing horseback christmas carols yesterday morning, while I pretended we were not related.

On a side note of the side note-- I think I've been to the same renaisance  fair a couple years ago...we visited one that was kind of back in the woods in upstate NY while we were visiting relatives.  Hard to forget the food, with the giant roast turkey legs and cinnamon roasted almonds. Thanks guys! This was really a blast to do, and Jenn saw it tonight and just LOVED it! She thought the 'bike motif" was just sooooo cool--she has a Kawy KX-250R, and wants to get a KDX-220 two-stroke to learn off-road with me. The Kawy of course would be kicking the Honda's butt! (don't ask! SoapBox [soapbox]Whistling [:-^]Laugh [(-D]

Hey Papa John, thanks for the props, I actuually used your line about "one horsepower" motors; Jenn got a laugh out of that!

Ian that was the very same Fair, up in Sterling, New york--the turkey legs and all that--cool place huh?

The grass IS different colors, you just can't see it show up in the photos. The "snow" is not snow; it's supposed to be blossoms and little flowers, like they have in Stuttgart, Germany--when we were there it was early summer and the trees in the town square and the lawn looked like this--more "personal touches" for Jenn.

Thanks, aj, ogrejohn, and dostacos; hope you all are having a Merry Christmas! See ya on Saturday here!

I don't think the Kawa is going to kick the Honda's butt, but I foresee, hot wings.  Is the wingding at your place.  I like mine extra spicy.  Burger [BG]Big Smile [:D]

doog,

Missed this one...haven't been checkin' the posts in dio's too much lately.  Another fine piece of work there doog!!!   I can only imagine the difficulty of painting figures at 1:72 scale..I struggle with 1:35.  You may want to put something in one photo that helps us relate to the scale...I think that will give us all a real appreciation for the difficulty involved.  I like the castle picture in the background too, nice touch!

Nicely done and very imaginative Doog. I like the modern logos incorporated into the scene too. Afterall, what are logos but modern medieval herladry....

I used to joust at the Sterling Fair back in 79 and 80. Man those were the days... Compared to the equipment we use today, I'm surprised we survived. Of all the tournaments and faires I've rode in since then, I still think that back then, that fair was the best. We had a good group of folks those days. Jousting at fairs has changed drasticly since then and is much more like original tournaments and looks infinitely better. Even though we hit harder today, its still considerably safer than what we did then. There is also a helk of alot more scholarly and research work done on the mechanics of it as well as the experimental archaeology that has changed what we know and how we do things. Today we ride like they did even using recreated saddles, then it was all for show.

Glad Jenn got a kick out of it too. Those projects always mean the most and are the most worth doing.

Nice Doog.  I did get that it was Spring - very nice effect.  In fact that would look awsome in a WWII dio, think of the contrast between the renewal of life (Spring) and the omnipresence of death (tanks and the like).  I digress

Anyhow, I really like the what-if-ness of it all.  Only gripe (and it is a small g gripe) is there isn't much weathering.  It's midieval times man, where's the filth and pestilence?  Of course, filth and pestilence don't exactly make the nicest of gifts to one's girlfriend, but still. . . who's more important, Jen or us Wink [;)]. . . .  Maybe a dead rotting cow behind the grandstands???

Bow [bow]

Karl, your work just amazes me.  Jenn must be loving her this diorama.  Since she likes horses, have you ever thought about building her German Field Kitchen horse carriage?

Thanks again guys!

Jenn did indeed love this dio; she really had a good laugh with the bike motif.

I've been kicking the idea around of a field kitchen, but it would have to be "converted" into something relevant to her and I...perhaps like turning the "kitchen" aspect of it into her jewelery or shoe cart; just something to "personalize" it, to give it a twist beyond the military aspect of it.

I have used the horses that came with the kit in several different ways...

Thanks again for looking, guys, and for the comments! I hope you all had as good a Christmas as we did! Big Smile [:D]

What a cool project! My only comment is on those ultra calm sheep. Are they doing ludes? Big ol' horses with armored guys on them thundering down  on them and they just keep on grazing. Must be some good grass.

Another original creative dio from the Doog. You, my friend, are a fountain of creativity. I wish I had 1/64th of your ability!
