You could always try Sculpey, since you're talking about kitchen-casting. This stuff bakes in the oven. You can get pretty detailed with this stuff; stays pliable until you bake it.

Have a look here

Everyone..................

Thanks so much for all your kind welcomes, I'm gladdened at the response of so many names that I'd become familier with as I'd read through the threads.

To continue my thoughts, I must admit to being at a crossroads within my modelling and have been looking for a solid direction for no short time now. As mentioned my thoughts have taken me to several areas of interest. I want to explore the possibilities of resin casting - at least on a kitchen table level. Hence the post of the TT axle earlier, this is part of a larger process where I'm attempting to scratch build a series of component parts in order to be able to render far more subjects than simply those available from the high street manufactur's. The Model T is largely of a time that I find particularly appealing [Between the Wars] and as such this is where the potential for Dioramic possibilities intrigues me, this also leads on to the the idea of figure work that could be included and just producing a selection of period figure types alone has me almost giddy with anticipation.

I know this is all rather ambitious and perhaps even unrealistic? But I'm hoping that with some help and guidance from you characters I can at least take a shot at these ideas?

So, here's the first question.............. when sculpting detail, especially figure conversions and the like: - What material is favoured or considered the best for the job. Please bear in mind I'm UK based and not all is available here - or it may carry a differing brand name.

Thanks for listening to me ramble on................ Longbow.

Every dio has to start somewhere. Smile [:)]  Might as well be with the differential!  Nice work.

Welcome, Longbow. If you got questions, ask. You'll get a bunch of opinions that will swirl around and turn into discussions for all of us to pick from. If your starting off in the direction of dioramas, get ready to SPEND SPEND SPEND!

Funny, Welcome to the Jungle is playing on my iPod right now. At least it doesn't get worse here everyday.

Hey there Longbow, Sign - Welcome [#welcome]. I've gotta say, looking at that scratchbuilt axle and the technical drawings behind it, I would have to guess you've more than overcome your "coordination and concentration issues." A big Sign - Ditto [#ditto] to what others have posted, just snuggle in, keep building and posting, and all will be right with the world! I know I can't wait to see what's going above that axle! Tongue [:P]

Model building isn't about patience, it's about passion.

Longbow,

First of all, Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the forum.

That scratch build of yours looks great and hope that you continue to update us with your build.

FSM, just like any other place in the societ, you'll run into good, bad and the ugly.  For the most part, you'll meet/interact with pleasant people and you'll also receive both positive and negative feedbacks as well.  It's all good.  Enjoy your stay and happy new year!

Thanks for the welcome chaps.......

Having returned to the forum I re-read my post with a fresh eye.......and I'm sorry if it comes across a little esoteric. It all made perfect sense in my head when I wrote it? But I'm sure you all get the drift?

I also realise that it's difficult for you to respond in any meaningful manner when all you've got is a lot of hot air in front of yourselves.

So, although this has in no way yet any relevence to a Diorama [I do have plans for it though]. And as evidence of my honest intentions within the forum here's the very latest piece of modelling I am engaged upon.

Because it's not even remotely available in any kit I've had to scratchbuild this rear axle, cross member, hub and spring unit for a 1925 Model TT truck.

Here you go then........

Ask if you feel the need......... I'll be happy to oblige if i'm able................. Longbow.

Perhaps not the correct place for this........ But ; -
Posted by Longbow on Sunday, December 30, 2007 11:19 AM

So, perhaps this really isn't the correct place for this.......... my very first post on the Finescale forum. But hopefully It should make sense as I explain?

However my intial thoughts....................... Woah! - Tough Crowd.

I mean, I spent all day yesterday reading through the threads here, and well........... I got to about page sixteen but that took nearly eight hours, and as I said - Tough crowd!

Which makes me all the more nervous as I try to elucidate what it is I'm doing here? You see firstly I'm an Auto' modeller, don't giggle as this is one of the things that bothers me, - and this because I've pretty well had it with the direction Auto' modelling seems to have taken.

Now I'm not going to arrive here and bullit point all the issues I have with my area of modelling, I'm certainly not going to the intro' thread and shout it from the rooftops either. No, here is where I need to be [I think].

Suffice to say I'm searching for something a little more meaningful in my builds. I've been pursuing quite actively the possibilities of exploring the dioramic or narrative qualities of Auto' modelling, but unfortunately my figure skills are nil and my ability to render terrain is non-existent so what I'm looking for is potentially a forum with a little more understanding, somewhere that positively embraces the concept of probability and pathos. One that could also provide encouragement and succour, camaraderie, entente and esprit de corps?

This it would seem positively oozed out of those sixteen pages - certainly it would appear you're all pretty damn passionate about your building. And that's another thing, it's so good to see folk building as opposed to just assembling - now there's a can of worms if you like!

Somewhere in those sixteen pages I spotted the idea of a small dio' being used as an exercise and this I'm keen to have a go at - it'll give you guys a starting point, and one from which to offer guidence. You will have to bear with me initially though as while reading through the various builds I soon realised I was woefully short on the type of materials you guys employ - but making do and mend is just one of the areas I'm very familiar with - and I think secretly enjoy?

So, what else do you need to know? I'm a mature chap whose modelled on and off thoughout his life, came back to it full time about seven or eight years ago......and took it pretty damn seriously for a while - too seriously perhaps?

Without dwelling on the point I was involoved in a traffic accident that left me struggling with co-ordination and concentration issues - this period allowed me the opportunity to reflect and  re-assess my hobby [and lots of other things too]. So, I choose now to make sure I'm having fun with what I do - and that it has value, credibility or integrity - take your pick!!

By nature I'm pretty soapy, I tend to listen before I speak, I'll usually try before I ask and I'll laugh with but never at! I feel starved of good modelling conversation, and the positive discourse that comes rom earnest debate. Ultimately I think I've read enough within these threads to enable me to gain most all your flavours! And I look forward to speaking with you all soon!

Cheers for now................ Longbow.
