WWII wooden airfield control towers
Posted by okie coyote on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 1:21 PM
Does anyone know of any plans, drawings, pics, or links to info on WWII wooden airfield control towers? I've just about exhausted all the searches I can think of with limited results. I resorted to playing my DVD of "Catch 22" and pausing on the scenes where they are in/around the control tower and making sketches. I sort of have one drawn up, but would like to have some more references. I understand that in most cases they were just built from materials at hand and no two were really the same, but would like to have some more references. Thanks in advance for any help.

Don't know if this will help, but here is a site for Croydon Airport - UK

http://www.controltowers.co.uk/C/Croydon.htm

This might have some other links to aid your search.

Try to Google Image Search "WWII airfield control tower." I just did it and got a bunch of pics of control towers WWII to present, including airfield layouts and other stuff.

Not sure what Theatre of Operations you are going for, but if you are doing the ETO/England, the movie "Memphis Belle" has a tower, but it's not wooden.  (By the way, there are few pics on the Google results that look like the tower in this movie.)

Maybe this will help?
