Kursk diorama idea
Posted by Tankluver on Thursday, January 17, 2008 11:44 AM
Hi all i am currently doing some research on the Battle of Kursk. I would like to make a diorama depicting a German Panther augsf D. with some infantry and an Sdkfz are moving up to the battle on the second day. I would like to place a German tank crew that has just bailed out from there tank after an engagment with the russians trying to get back to their own assembly area. I would also like to depicting a 4 man unit doing the same. If you've seen the kit bailing out of the pocket from Tristar I think you would  know what im talking about. The unit that would be advancing up would be the GrossDuechland unit. I don't have the kits yet. It will be a long time to build. So what do you guys think of my diorama idea?

Your explanation was a little foggy, but if I understand it, you want to depict a panzer crew bailing out and retreating, while a Panther, halftrack and infantry are advancing.  Is this correct?

Having a panzer crew bailing out and retreating with reinforcements coming up is a good dio idea.  The possibilities of creating a sense of drama and urgency would be easy to do with such a scene.

It is important though to make sure your dio puts the emphasis where you want it; on the advancing troops OR on the retreating, battle-weary troops.  Otherwise the scene will be confused and not make sense to viewers.  Shepherd Paine's book "How to Build Dioramas" is an excellent source and has helped me immensely with composing, laying out and building my dioramas/vignettes.  It helped me understand the balance and flow of the diorama idea, and how to make it better!

Start buying the kits, building 'em and keep developing that idea! Keep us posted! Smile [:)]
