Kharkov, 1943: "Backhand Blow" *UPDATE 5-21: new pics*
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 9, 2008 9:32 PM

Just a quick update on my "Kharkov 1943" dio...finished two figs earlier this year and have now finished building another two to go in dio...painting is next...fig with headset will be in turret of DML Mk IV G "Kharkov".

Man that PE tank intercom system was a beast to get right!!!

Not sure yet if I will use this fig, what do you think?

Geez, Manny--this is frickin' OUTSTANDING! That headset and throat mic look incredible, man! WOW! Tongue [:P]

We must be thinking alike--I'm doing the Tamiya Field Kitchen, and I've got two figures, and I replaced the heads on them and one has that head with the furry cap! (Or very close to it!)

The painting on thses looks tremendous! I LOVE the scarf!

Where'd ya get that cool PE headset? Who makes it?

Thanks, doog---that the Royal Model's set #217: German headset and throat mics...resin and PE...lots of patience and CA!!!

Yeah, I thought the pattern on the scarf added a little uniqueness to the fig and it wasn't all that uncommon for the soldiers to supplement civilian attire w/ military issue, particularly in cold weather...

Looking forward to your field kitchen scene...you must be planning a cold weather scene? I can remember when that field kitchen first came out w/ the horses---a true classic!!!

Given the cold weather gear on the guys, I'd forgo the female figure. Save her for a summer scene where it would be reasonable for her to be in a tank top.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Cool, Manny--that's a kit I'll be keeping an eye out for!

Yup, I'm doing a deep-snow vignette with the FK-I'll be posting it in about two weeks? Big Smile [:D]

Oooooo! Don't hide the charms!

Your figures are exceptional, Manny! The skin tones are kind of understated and take great pics!

One of these days it would really be very appreciated if you did a how-to with your figures. They really are astounding.

Looking really tasty there, Manny!

Whatcha got--PE rifle slings? That's cool! Who makes those? I'm always using lead foil from wine bottles--and that's getting harder to find....

Thanks, doog---I am really excited about these figs...should be able to post some more painted ones this week...one of them is turning out to maybe be the best fig I have ever done...

I sometimes use scrap PE for the slings but these actually came from A GEN2 DML fig set...they have started including PE medals, belts and slings in their GEN2 kits...

Hmmm,....I've been staying away from those Gen2 kits-too many damned parts for me--but if they have that much cool stuff, I may be tempted!?

Thanks, doog---I am excited about the "finished" product as well...should have approx. 9 figs in total and one AFV...there are some actual pics of this dog with a MkIV at Kharkov I have in my refs so I thought it would be not only cool, but historically accurate as well!

Manny these are some awsome fig's the detail is something else and the paint job's are outstandingBow [bow]!!! I'm guessing you use acrylic's,my choice also. One thing I noticed, the fig pointing and holding the MP40,you have the sling attatched to the bottom of the pistol grip, the strap should go into a notch located at the back of the reciever. Looking foward to seeing more of this one.

Great eye...actually the sling is glued in the correct spot but the slack is just "laying down" on the back side of the pistol grip on the way there...I actually use Humbrol enamels for everything except the final flesh painting, in which case I go to oils...the white uniforms are "knocked down" in brightness with a nice wash of raw umber. Thanks for the comments!

Manny, you've always been an excellent figure modeler, but these show an even better level of technique than your work in the past, especially in the faces and particularly in the eye detail. Well done.

Thanks, I have listened to the feedback on the eyes and have changed my technique to look more realistic...also, these figs are gonna be on a snow-swept plain in Russia so the glare would be pretty harsh and I am taking that into account when painting the eyes...I do feel that all-in-all these are some of my best figs in a long time...appreciate the comments!

Actually I basecoat in Humbrol Matte Sand, as irt serves as the base for the flesh colors I use and also acts as a good overall primer...the pics you have seen of the unpainted figs are of them in their natural resin color of dark cream and light grey...I use Humrol enamels and and W & S oils for the figs.
