First Tree Attempt
Posted by IanIsBored2000 on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 4:36 PM

I've started making terrain/foliage for a diorama I'm working on, and most forest scenes don't look complete without some trees.  So, I decided to man up and give it a try.  I used the Wire Method which can be found on Armorama, and started with a small tree as a test.  I used spackle/wall putty/filler for bark, painted it to resemble white birch, and used Woodland Scenics Clump Foliage, airbrushed lighter green to vary the color.  I probably should have the trunk thicker, but this was just a test.

Comments/criticism welcome

Thanks for looking, Ian

Looks good, Ian. Real good. A bit "thick" for that scale (not the trunk, but the foliage), but it's a good test run.

Woodland Scenics make a good branch-leaf product. It's great for adding to theboughs you've created with the twisted wire technique.

If this link doesn't take you right to the page, go to WS home page, from menu at left, go: Landscaping>Trees>Fine-Leaf Foliage. I like this stuff for what it's worth.

Thanks Steve.  I was wondering if that foliage was too thick.  I couldn't choose between clump foliage or fine leaf foliage, and went with the former.  I'll check out the fine leaf stuff.  I think maybe if on my next attempt I break up the clumps better, or even sift out the bigger stuff, I can thin it out a bit.  I might be able to operate on this one with some tweezers to get rid of some excess foliage.  Maybe I'll try a tree with thicker foliage next time as well, as opposed to a birch which are usually pretty thin on foliage..
