First Diorama WIP
Posted by 666Irish on Friday, March 7, 2008 12:56 PM

A friend of mine owns one of the "Tiger" tanks that was used in Saving Private Ryan. He asked me to build a model of it (bashing a T34/85 and a Tiger I together), and then putting it on a diorama or display base. i chose the former. This will be my first real Diorama, and i would like some constructive criticism and ideas.

Keep in mind that it isn't even close to finished, and so far I only have 1 picture...so here it is.

The base is a 12" X 12" Faux marble tile. The building i ordered from Squadron, the sidewalks and area under the arches are poured plaster, then etched with a dental tool, and the street is a combination of resin cobblestone, and home made plaster tile. The soil that i used to make the mud in the street was sent to me by a friend from a little town about 12 miles South of  Omaha Beach.

She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

Looking good so far. Can't argue with the coor of the soil. Big Smile [:D] My one comment would be on the lamp post. We modelers like to pose those bent. I'm not sure that's accurate. The older posts I've seen around here are more of a cast iron which tends to fracture, rather than bend.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Excellent point... I hadnt thought of that, but they almost certainly would have been cast iron for that time and place. That is now on the list of items to fix.

Looks good so far. Would the street be dirt as you have depicted? I can understand if had a building that resembled a farm house of some sort. The building you have used looks more like one you would find on a paved street. Hey, i'm no expert on european streets and buildings, so you may have a valid diorama setting. It just looked odd to me at first glance.

I look foward to seeing more.

It would most certainly be mostly mud. From pictures, as well as looking at the film, it is a cobblestone street that has seen bombing, as well as steel tracked vehicle, so a good portion of the cobble is gone. Add to that the rain in the area during the time this "action" took place, it would pretty much be a rocky mudbath.

Thanks for the thoughts... I would like to get as much in the suggestion and criticism department as possible. This is my first, but won't be my last.

Thanks

Quite right in your explanation and it all makes sense.

Just finished making a partial "hardwood floor" for the second floor. And just poured some plaster to break up for rubble. Will try to take more pictures tonight and post them. Thanks for the help and kind words, everyone! I really do appreciate it!

Edited to add a still from the film showing the street (there are other shots in the film showing the remnants of cobblestone).
