Why dont you put a platoon of soldiers at attention waiting to board the plane

You could put some crates there stacked in a couple of rows with one or two guys with clipboards checking them off before being loaded.

Perhaps a Squad of Soldiers at "Inspection Arms" attention.  Changing of the airfield guard or something of that sort.

Perhaps a carload or two of drunken soldiers, reporting to assist in the loading?  Their drunkenness would help explain why they've driven closer to the Gigante than regulations might allow.

Well, since it's a runway, you can't really load it up with vegetation; trees, bushes, etc.

Or livestock?...hmmmm...

That's a tough one....I agree that a photo might help us help you.

Then again, if your action is located in a focal point, you may not need much at all in that area. Sometimes dead space is ok, if it doesn't distract from the focal point. Even something simple like some flowers or some color variation can just provide some surface variation, and that can be enough.

Here's what I would do--skew the plane at a 45* angle--don't put it absolutely parallel to the base's sides. That way, you have a larger space in front of the plane, and your focal point is more powerful. This is one of the "rules" of diorama's anyway--never put your central elements at parallel angles to the base's sides. This arrangement would really solve your problem. Your focal point would be front center, and the dead space in the rear would not even be noticeable.

Might you be able to post a picture? A visual might stimulate the imagination...

Maybe some troops lounging around on the side while the vehicles are loaded... eating, smoking, etc. Or a couple of goats grazing on the grass.

"Dead space" in a diorama.

Guys,

I am currently in the closing stages of a diorama set in an airfield in Sicily.  The aircraft is a ME323 "Gigant".  With a wingspan of 30 inches (even in 1/72 scale),  I made the diorama base 20" x 27" and I can fit the wings in sideways.  I seem to have a lot of open ground either side of the aircraft, aft of the wings.  All the activity is to the front of the plane (vehicles being loaded, fuel drums coming off a truck, a final pre-flight briefing by a senior officer.)  I dont want to make the mistake of piling stuff all around the aircraft just to fill up the dead space, as I think it just wouldnt look realistic.  At a pinch, I could add a fuel truck, but as its set in a grassy field, there probably wouldnt be any permanent structures anyway ?  This is really kicking my *** at the moment.   Banged Head [banghead]  Any thoughts welcome.
